The Mystic Voices of Firs 3:16 ------ 39:49 It's a real mouthful but the name trips off slightly faster than if this band from central Greece had named itself A Diadem Of 12 Stars which was the name of the debut album from Wolves In The Throne Room whom ADODS cite as one of their main musical influences. WITTR certainly does come to mind when I listen to ADODS' debut "The Mist Bearer", a highly atmospheric Cascadian-style BM recording that brings to mind dense forests dripping with water after a morning shower and mist rising from the forest floor as the sun shines down through the canopy. There is an urgent energy in the music as if the members have a vital message that all humanity needs to hear before we devastate the planet through our thoughtless quest for material wealth and our many wars. The band's style emphasises fast minimalist tremolo guitars whose sound is distorted enough to suggest constant rain showers and the drumming is efficient enough to back the guitars without overwhelming them. The music can be surprisingly powerful and aggressive especially in the album's latter half. On the minus side the sound can be a bit thin and repetitive, and the music is not especially original in its general folk / dark ambient / eco-BM / post-metal orientation. The level of production is clear enough that quite subtle and low-key field recordings of nature and acoustic instruments in all their gentle melancholy beauty can be heard and their nuances appreciated; but not so polished that dark ambience suggesting a return to savage nature is suppressed. Indeed the main highlight of "The Mist Bearer" is its beautiful sound and strikingly gorgeous atmospheres of dark wet forests, running streams, rising white mists and heavy water vapour in the air. After a gentle harp-like acoustic introduction, the business end of the album gets under way with rapid-fire tremolo guitar gunning and a chorus of male voices solemnly serenading the dawn of day in a pagan ritual. The track fires off energy, aggression and passion all the way through even though the male keening has a sorrowing edge. While the track can be monotonous in parts, its fiery urgency helps keep listeners riveted to its trail all the way to its surprising denouement. The other significant BM track "The Call Of Perished Gods In The Echoing Roars Of Thunders" is a long 16-minute tapestry of atmospheric neo-primitivist nature worship, roaring chainsaw guitar in a shroud of cold ether and a lone and fragmented lead guitar solo, all falling together into extended passages of quiet melodic minimalism or BM aggression in which longing, dark shadows, complex emotion and voices of ghosts from the past, their identities and the fate that made them perpetual wanderers on earth long forgotten even by themselves, loom large. This piece builds up into something mighty and heroic without falling into self-indulgent bombast, in part thanks to the musicians resolutely sticking to the straight and narrow BM path. On the whole this album is quite a good debut for what I presume is a young band inspired by Cascadian and other nature-themed BM. The music does seem very derivative and needs its own distinct identity that draws on ADODS' own resources and heritage. Alternating between BM and dark folk ambient can become monotonous and boring if done too much and the band members might consider using more native Greek folk and urban blues music elements (like rembetika music) and instrumentation in future work. Also I had no sense while listening to this album that a definite narrative from A to B all the way to Z was present: that may be due to the musical arrangements in which after every BM track there was a repetitive acoustic track simply detailing atmosphere.
