Aboubacar "Papa" Camara has pursued his own course as a djembe player and dancer. A former member of the Juno Award-winning group Alpha Yaya Diallo, he created his own group, Doundounba, which he continues to lead, performing both traditional Guinean percussion and West African soukous/highlife melodies. Camara inherited his skills as a dancer from his grandmother, who was known for her graceful movement and enthusiastic spirit. Although he studied djembe with Sekou Sylla, from childhood Camara has continued to display natural talent as a dancer. Dancing with a local ballet troupe from the age of nine, he showed an affinity for traditional Guinean dance. He continued to study dance at the Provincial Ballet School, which he attended for five years from the age of 11. Accepting an invitation to join the National Ballets Soleil d'Afrique de Guinea in 1986, Camara was mentored by the troupe's master dancer, Gibril Camara. Rising to the positions of assistant choreographer and lead dancer, he remained with the troupe for a decade.
