While the djembΘ soulΘ is cylindrical, the djembΘ │ bara is shaped like an egg-timer. Adama DramΘ, born in │ Burkina Faso but based in C⌠te d'Ivoire, plays the latter. │ This drum is often fitted with metal resonators and is the │ most expressive and striking of West African percussion │ instruments. Musicians beat the antelope or goat skin, kept │ taut with thin twine, with their bare hands. The skin's │ broad surface enables the musician to vary the timbre and │ colour of the sound. Adama DramΘ is one of the rare │ djembΘfola (or djembΘ-playing) griots to have recorded a │ solo album. His enthusiasm and devotion to his art and his │ role as a contemporary griot maintaining ancestral │ traditions, is equalled by his determination to pass on its │ rules and customs, that are explained in his book Jeliya, │ written with Arlette Senn-Borloz (published by L'Harmattan, │ Paris).
