│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ AliasÆ first offering, 1987Æs self titled ║ │
│║ æAliasÆ, was an intriguing, though decidedly ║ │
│║ patchy release; for weeks, months even, IÆd ║ │
│║ listen to it û and kept changing my mind whether ║ │
│║ I liked it or not. In the end, I decided it was ║ │
│║ largely the production that held it back û it ║ │
│║ had an incredibly weak demo feel, that belied ║ │
│║ some of the actual cool guitars and songwriting ║ │
│║ ideas that formed it. My March 2010 review of ║ │
│║ the album testifies to this end. I had owned the ║ │
│║ Alias debut for some time before finally coming ║ │
│║ to a conclusion about it and writing this brief ║ │
│║ review. With AliasÆ second offering, the 1989 ║ │
│║ (and re-released in 1994) album æMetal to ║ │
│║ InfinityÆ û I took no such time to come to a ║ │
│║ conclusion; I liked it instantly. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ DonÆt get me wrong û the first effort isnÆt ║ │
│║ totally avoidable û it has some good direction, ║ │
│║ but either the recording, or actual mastering û ║ │
│║ something went wrong with it, now if it were the ║ │
│║ mastering, then it may be as simple as finding ║ │
│║ the original tapes, & remastering those mothers ║ │
│║ (as was done in a similar situation by Target ║ │
│║ (Bel) with their earlier works (which had the ║ │
│║ same hollow problem) and they came out sounding ║ │
│║ twice as good. The debut sounds like an early ║ │
│║ Alloy Czar mixtape, whereas this one sounds like ║ │
│║ a Burning Starr record in comparison. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ æMetal to InfinityÆ displays growth in musical ║ │
│║ delivery, as well as the stronger production ║ │
│║ which lacked on the debut. Tracks like æStormy ║ │
│║ EyesÆ pack an Iron Maidenish feel; guitars are ║ │
│║ complex, well recorded, and mastered well into ║ │
│║ the sound û the tone is great, and the overall ║ │
│║ feel of the song is very dreamy; trance-like û ║ │
│║ offering more of a deep feel than what you are ║ │
│║ able to squeeze from the majority of the ║ │
│║ promising, though lacking debut. Tracks like ║ │
│║ æDreamerÆ further the an Iron Maiden/USPM sound, ║ │
│║ with some very strong likeness to the almighty ║ │
│║ Crimson Glory being apparent; powerful, ║ │
│║ mesmerizing intro section with pounding drums, ║ │
│║ heavy crashy guitars and trance-like chants. ║ │
│║ Vocals are strong. I enjoy this fantastical ║ │
│║ sound and powerful feel on the album, over the ║ │
│║ thinner, simpler, though passable first ║ │
│║ offering. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ All in all, Alias takes a step up on this ║ │
│║ sophomore effort. Carl HaydenÆs vocal efforts ║ │
│║ convey the appropriate mood for the material. ║ │
│║ The rhythm section in this record are recorded ║ │
│║ fair clearer û and come across thick and full. ║ │
│║ Guitar tones are nice, and add to the ambience ║ │
│║ in mid/late 80s Iron Maidenish feel û on an ║ │
│║ album that comes across as a definite cross in ║ │
│║ direction between these aforementioned British ║ │
│║ stalwarts, as well as the decidedly USPMish ║ │
│║ qualities of CG/Fifth Angel. IÆd recommend this ║ │
│║ one to USPM fans, especially over their debut ║ │
│║ record. The material is often slow or mid paced ║ │
│║ with a dreamlike quality û not as dynamic or ║ │
│║ catchy as some of the other USPM gems, but is a ║ │
│║ strong example of doing good without the rare ║ │
│║ dynamism of established legends; itÆs good û not ║ │
│║ mind blowing. ║ │
