The music can be described as $▒s &▒? dark, aggressive, melancholic and brutal. Ultra fast $▒s &▒? parts combined with slow atmospheric ones. They embrace $▒s &▒? the wicked, melancholic beauty of true evil. No trend $▒s &▒? will be able to change that. Appearances in big $▒s &▒? newspapers who concentrated on the sensational aspect $▒s &▒? of the bandÆs philosophies made them public enemy no. 1 $▒s &▒? in certain countries. Some German clubs received bomb $▒s &▒? threats from Anarchist HC (anti-metal) movements if $▒s &▒? Ancient Rites was allowed to play there. This $▒s &▒? controversial aspect only increased the bandÆs cult $▒s &▒? status. Ancient Rites always followed their own path $▒s &▒? regardless anyone or anything. They donÆt preach in $▒s &▒? their lyrics or try to convince others to follow their $▒s &▒? path, only true dark souls they find interesting to $▒s &▒? reach. Ancient Rites started out in April Æ89. The $▒s &▒? line-up consisted of Johan and Philip (guitars), Stefan $▒s &▒? (drums) and Gunther (bass/vocals). After one year they $▒s &▒? recorded the "Dark Ritual" demo which was spread $▒s &▒? throughout the entire underground worldwide. The band $▒s &▒? had to face many problems like fights at their gigs $▒s &▒? which gave them a bad reputation resulting in less $▒s &▒? venues wanting to book the band, boycots cause of their $▒s &▒? attitudes and lyrics, cancelled tours etc. Problems $▒s &▒? within the band forced Ancient Rites to replace Stefan $▒s &▒? by drumroadie Walter. On the 31st of August 1990 Philip $▒s &▒? died in a car accident together with a friend. Bart $▒s &▒? (guitars) joined and Johan decided to leave since he $▒s &▒? never could relate to the satanic philosophies of the $▒s &▒? band. Soon after Pascal (guitars) joined, the band $▒s &▒? recorded the "Evil Prevails" EP (Æ92) which was $▒s &▒? released on their own label Fallen Angel Records and $▒s &▒? released in the USA through Wild Rags Records. $▒s &▒? Guitarist Pascal was fired after the release of this EP $▒s &▒? since he had too many other obligations. That same year $▒s &▒? Ancient Rites recorded a track to be released on a $▒s &▒? split EP on After Dark Records and on the "detonation" $▒s &▒? compilation CD from Tessa Records which resulted in a $▒s &▒? lot of airplay. The next year the band recorded a split $▒s &▒? LP for Columbian label Warmaster which introduced them $▒s &▒? into the South American underground. Since this was $▒s &▒? only a limited edition this split LP has became a $▒s &▒? collectors item. By this time the band started touring $▒s &▒? throughout Europe and playing shows in France, Holland, $▒s &▒? Belgium, Germany and Greece. While being in Greece to $▒s &▒? play with Rotting Christ in the famous Thorns club they $▒s &▒? entered the studio with Morbid from Necromantia/Rotting $▒s &▒? Christ to record a track from another split EP to be $▒s &▒? released on Molon Lave Records. Back in Belgium the $▒s &▒? band entered the studio to record their first full $▒s &▒? length album entitled "The Diabolical Serenades" which $▒s &▒? was released on After Dark Records in January 1994. $▒s &▒? This Album received very good response from allover the $▒s &▒? globe and resulted in several tours of which a European $▒s &▒? tour with Impaled Nazarene. All merchandise sold out on $▒s &▒? this tour which was a small miracle as off the band $▒s &▒? never tried to reach the masses. In 1995 the band has $▒s &▒? been active touring in Europe with Cradle of Filth and $▒s &▒? others + headline shows. They played Holland, Belgium, $▒s &▒? Portugal, Italy, Germany, France, Switzerland, England $▒s &▒? (3 times!!) etc. In 1995 they also signed a recording $▒s &▒? contract with Mascot Records. Besides new albums Mascot $▒s &▒? will also re-release the debut album "The Diabolical $▒s &▒? Serenades". The band entered the studio in August 1995 $▒s &▒? to start work on their second full length album $▒s &▒? entitled "Blasfemia Eternal". This album shows the $▒s &▒? musical progression of the unholy trinity. More time $▒s &▒? and work was spend in the studio which clearly shows in $▒s &▒? the production. More variety is offered without $▒s &▒? betraying the typical Ancient Rites sound/style, on the $▒s &▒? contrary: intensity, darkness and aggression only have $▒s &▒? increased! Inspiration is drawn from literature, art, $▒s &▒? the many travels to remains of ancient and medieval $▒s &▒? civilisations, poetry, history, misanthropy and $▒s &▒? satanism. Each track sounds different from the other $▒s &▒? both in the music and vocal field yet all very black. $▒s &▒? Originality is important in order to survive in this $▒s &▒? overcrowded scene.
