Kate ║ │ │║ Bush's "Wuthering Heights" is a spectacular song ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ From South America comes Angra, who at times ║ │ │║ can sound like mirror images of classic ║ │ │║ Helloween and (to a slightly lesser extent) ║ │ │║ current Stratovarius. There are soaring vocals, ║ │ │║ and fast and intricate instrument playing. The ║ │ │║ songs do not, however, stay consistently fast ║ │ │║ through-and-through, as the above comparisons ║ │ │║ are clearer in some places than others. Still ║ │ │║ strong work, though. ║ │ │║ "Carry On" is the first taste of the rapid and ║ │ │║ precise material, and is followed up by the ║ │ │║ drive rhythm of "Time"---a track with an ║ │ │║ excellent guitar-fueled flow. The choppy and ║ │ │║ strong "Evil Warning" stands out, and a number ║ │ │║ of tunes beg to be noticed, including the title ║ │ │║ cut, "Streets of Tomorrow," and the smooth ║ │ │║ "Never Understand." ║ │ │║ A band to heed, and a unit most true power/prog ║ │ │║ fans have been long aware of. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ It was only a matter of time before someone ║ │ │║ decided that if they were going to try to copy ║ │ │║ Helloween, they better a) do it right, and with ║ │ │║ energy, and b) throw in something new into the ║ │ │║ mix. Brazilian metal band Angra certainly has ║ │ │║ unleashed one of the more energetic, and yet ║ │ │║ professional, debuts in the power metal arena. ║ │ │║ True, you've got the traditional super-melodic ║ │ │║ anthemic sound here, as shown in "Carry On", as ║ │ │║ well as the requisite sad, dramatic ballad ║ │ │║ ("Stand Away"). However, the band exhibits a ║ │ │║ smoothness and, could you believe, "funkiness", ║ │ │║ which eludes even some of the best power metal ║ │ │║ bands. A couple of examples include the funky ║ │ │║ breakdown section (complete with dancey synth ║ │ │║ horn blasts) in "Carry On", as well as the tango ║ │ │║ section in their mega-epic "Evil Warning". These ║ │ │║ guys mix up Romantic-era classicism with native ║ │ │║ South American rhythms and feels, and tack on a ║ │ │║ fresh, airy feeling which evades many others who ║ │ │║ work in the "Wagner-rock" field. Instead of ║ │ │║ constantly giving a sense of an impending ║ │ │║ glammerdrung/"twilight of the gods", Angra makes ║ │ │║ you almost glad to wake up to another day.
