Live on Proton Radio (www.protonradio.com):
Angus Robinson
Having put his first needle to record in front of a live
crowd while a student at Western University in London,
Canada back in 1998, itÆs taken Angus Robinson a very
short time indeed to climb the breakbeat ranks of his
hometown of Toronto and, for that matter, all of Canada.
After relocating from London to Toronto, Angus was
quickly identified for his unique and extraordinarily
advanced track selection by one of the worldÆs top
record stores, Release Records, to head up their on-line
ordering platform and to handle all of their breakbeat
record purchasing.
From there it was only a matter of time before Angus,
who was being billed under his Madhatter alias at the
time, became a staple of the breakbeat scene in Toronto
where his progressive breakbeat and nu-school influences
went against, and allowed him to stand out from, the
funky breaks that were the norm.
In early spring of 2002, the promoters of Breathe (one
of the premier progressive house clubnights in the
world) approached Angus about coming on board as a
resident DJ for their groundbreaking new night called
Futurized which would be instrumental in bringing the
worldÆs biggest and best progressive / nu-school
breakbeat talent to Toronto.
Essentially built around the incredible talent and
behind-the-decks presence of Angus Robisnon, Futurized
has drawn crowds in excess of 1100 to System Soundbar
for nights featuring a selection of guests including
B.L.I.M., Meat Katie, Starecase, Jody (of Way Out West),
DJ Hyper, Koma Bones and more.
Still in touch with his roots, Angus co-founded and
still takes the time to maintain www.torontobreaks.com
which places the focus on the entire breakbeat scene in
Toronto and he can still be found pushing the latest
vinyl behind the counter at Release Records. In
addition, look for forthcoming production and remix
efforts on the Release label from Angus... and of
course... he'll be knocking 'em dead on the dancefloor
with three and four hour sets as Futurized, under his
command at the decks, steams full speed ahead.
Hedrock Valley Beats
July 7th
We want to tell you a story about three Irish lads and
some music. A tale which involves, in no particular
order, the 1998 World Cup, ill-fated rehearsals, a
written-off Mercedes, original breaks, hard edge,
hip-hop, electro, big beat and breakbeat and go-go
dancing in New York. Go-go dancing in New York? Sorry,
must have been thinking about something else entirely.
Are you sitting comfortably? Then we'll begin.
HOW THEY MET
Frankie met Foxy when they were 16. "He was this
non-agreeable character, a sarcy fucker," remembers
Frankie. Both into acid jazz, both wearing corduroys and
Adidas Gazelles, they were two of a kind, so they hooked
up. Frankie found that he lived down the road from
Decky. Increasingly they'd find themselves meeting up on
the way home, beered-up. Same clothes, same love for
music, it wasn't long before all three were hanging out
together.
HOW THE BALL STARTED ROLLING
"I was doing stuff on my own," explains Decky, "I gave
something to a DJ in Derry who kept playing it out and
people were liking it." The DJ asked if Decky could do
it live. Course he could. Just not on his own. Foxy and
Frankie offered to back him up. A gig was arranged.
Hedrock Valley Beats had arrived, kicking and screaming.
Quite literally. It was the 1998 World Cup. Foxy had
just settled down with a carry out to watch the
Croatia/Jamaica showdown. Decky and Foxy had other
plans: with their first gig three days away maybe they
should rehearse.
Striking while the iron was hot, Foxy was dragged from
footie match to studio, carry-out still in hand. The
band recall that first rehearsal with fondness. "It was
a fucking disaster," they say.
"We thought it would be so easy," says Decky. "Bass
guitar, decks, keyboards, sampler that kind of thing. We
thought would be simple, but no way. On the Sunday night
we recorded ourselves, listened to it in the car and it
sounded. . . really good. The gig went. . . perfectly.
Half the town had come to see us, it was fantastic.
Still one of our best gigs."
Determined to keep the wheels a-turning, they heard
Bentley Rhythm Ace were coming to nearby Portrush for a
show. They'd need a support band wouldn't they?
At 10 o' clock on a miserable Sunday night they drove
from Derry to the venue and handed the promoter a tape.
A tape which, while listening to it on the way home,
caused him to roll his dad's six-day-old Mercedes. A
good tape, then.
HOW GOOD???
Think Lo Fidelity Allstars do hip-hop. Think Beastie
Boys do big beat. Think dance music with a rock and roll
attitude. They got the gig.
HOW IT ALL WENT RIGHT
"We just decided to see how it goes," laughs Foxy.
"Except we never had to see. There was never any
question after the Bentley thing, it just went off from
there."
The right people got the tapes, HVB got more gigs. In
the meantime, 500 copies of the lead track, the Easy
E-sampling funk-fuelled skew-wiff hip-hop of Radio
Beatbox, appeared as a white label late in 1999. Pete
Tong played it, Jo Whiley played it, Annie Nightingale
says it's her all-time number two favourite dance tune.
Lamacq went bonkers for it. A live session was booked
for his show. "There were technical problems," sighs
Decky.s
Technical problems? "Actually it was a disaster...
everything stopped. There was 30 seconds of silence on
Radio 1. We were just sat there going, 'We don't believe
this is happening." Of course, it was. In a good way.
The right noises were obviously being made.
The story goes Infectious got hold of a tape at Cream in
Liverpool. Maybe it was the promoter from Portrush who,
by now, was studying in Liverpool. Except he denies it.
Maybe it was Richard from Bentleys, who in his Pop Will
Eat Itself days was signed to Infectious. Except he
denies it too.
"There's possibly a poltergeist involved," believes
Frankie. They signed to Infectious Records shortly
before Christmas 1999.
HOW IT GETS EVEN BETTER...
Hedrock Valley Beats are the only band to remix Ash.
HVB's version of 'Jesus Says' is a magnificent chunk of
floorfilling indie/dance crossover in the fine tradition
of Weatherall and Oakenfold. Thing is, it never saw the
light of day.
"It seems to be that everyone had their own wee story,"
offers Decky. "The whole problem was Ash went on and off
about it - one minute they liked it, the next minute
they said no because they felt like it would be jumping
on the bandwagon."
It does exist, if you search hard enough.
"We don't know who pressed it, who distributed it, we've
one in the house each and that's it," says Foxy. "It's
on vinyl, it can be got if you hunt and hunt. Knock at
my house and if the price is right, I'll sell it."
Their considerable skill as remixers is well worth
seeking out. Try, for example, their mix of recent James
single 'Crash', a rework which could sit proudly
alongside anything that turned dancefloors upside down
during their 'Sit Down' heyday.
