The band formed back in 2016, when co-lead singers Samantha and JD, two Brooklyn public school teachers, started playing together. They quickly filled out the rest of the band with close friends on guitar, bass, and drums ù from there, theyÆve been playing ever since, releasing two EPs and gigging around Brooklyn for the past three years. That history makes perfect sense when you first press play on the bandÆs full-length debut, Bad Luck. You can hear how in step with one another the members of Answering Machine are. Their music is rock with more classic influence than punk. Each instrument line is tight, every hook is in its right place. ThereÆs not much experimentation or spontaneity on Bad Luck ù instead, theyÆre traded for impeccability. What that leads to is a collection of unassailable rock songs, each of them sharp as a razor. The band cites everyone from Tom Petty to Against Me! as influences, and, at their best, they sound like both, sometimes within seconds of each other. Each song has a command of melody that has Answering Machine standing among giants, with just enough bite to make their own name for themselves. Bad Luck hits its climax with ôMarie,ö a second-side track that features each band member at their best (especially bassist Craig, whose relentless lines give the song its beating heart). Perhaps understandably, ôMarieö is the most distinct song on Bad Luck, with Samantha bringing to it a sort of country melody, wistful and bittersweet. It adds an emotional depth to the record, that otherwise plays things pretty close to the vest. ThatÆs not to say its other tracks arenÆt charming, though ù they might not be the most emotional songs out there, but sometimes a killer riff is just as powerful. ThereÆs something inherently comforting about Bad Luck. Even though itÆs rooted in rock, it makes for easy listening ù not in any derogatory way, but more like the feeling you get revisiting some piece of art you know by heart. There arenÆt many surprises to Bad Luck, just 30 minutes of pristinely polished rock. It goes down like a crisp lager on a summer day: easy and refreshing. For some, thatÆs exactly what we might need. I had spent the weeks before I first heard Bad Luck supremely sick, relegated to painful days spent in bed. It was kismet, then, that Bad Luck would find me just as I was getting better. Its power chords helped reinvigorate me, its chunky bass lines gave the endless days a sense of forward momentum. In spite of the pessimistic point of view of its title track, Bad Luck is rock at its most heartening ù five friends making righteous tunes that help pass the uncertain times we find ourselves in. It might not change the world, but itÆs bound to make your day. ............................................................................ LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLEEEEE!
