Rarely does an artist jump feet first directly into the limelight Artem Kalalb has proven to be an exception to that rule as Sunord hits the Particles catalogue. With an assured debut on the Spring Particles 2015 compilation, Artem Kalalb provided a moment of beauty with his expertly crafted Wandering Ghost. The Russian newcomer from the Moscow capital has thus illustrated a set of skills that belie his newly emerging status. Moving forward at rapid pace, Artem Kalalb now presents his five-track Sunord EP, continuing his production prowess with considerable aplomb. As a new production alias, Sunord now provides Kalalb with another vehicle in which to display his talents and explore his artistic creativity. Opening the Sunord EP, Wandering Ghost once again reminds us of Artem Kalalb's impressive sound as the deep, dark groove envelopes the listener in a shroud of pulsating melody and rising tension before a drop strips rhythms to the core in order to rebuild once more. Joining forces with supremely talented producer and head of the iconic Somebodys Story imprint, Igor Cold lends his skills to Mysterious Signals. Provoking a haunting mood with thickly woven textures that fade in and out, a melodic sequence rises out of laid back groove and effects-laden distorted lead to add further drama to an intelligent piece. Characterised by a strong house beat, Limb hits its stride with a sublime bass line that helps deliver a spine-tingling moment of tension. Rising in energy from the mid-point onwards, a collection of melodies blends together to create a work of real verve. Changing the mood somewhat, Where the Sun Goes is a stripped back offering that has its roots in downtempo electronica with its subtle use of piano melodies against a backdrop of shuffling hats and long, sustained pads. The resultant work is a track of beauty and elegance. Sunord closes on a moment of upbeat magic with Mega Satori providing bouncing bass groove against a backdrop of percussive house rhythms. A pad swirls across the stereo spectrum as a stepped melody rotates left and right in similar fashion. Echoes of Underworld can be heard in the repetitive melodic phrasing to create a work that has a striking ambience coursing through its musical veins.
