They reside near Fresno, California and they have a collection of self-written songs that are influenced by the likes of Pedro the Lion, At The Drive In, Foo Fighters, Weezer, and Mineral. The content of Atari Champ's songs is diverse and their songs have had topics such as tragic stories of rodeo heros, unorganized treasure hunts and nostalgic childhood memories. Lyricist, Paul Chesterton, tends to prefer telling a story from the third person perspective rather than writing a typical first person account of a subject. Four people combine their talents to create this music. Those people are Johnny Quiroz (bass guitar), Mike Morris (guitars, keyboards), Corey Dobbins (drums, background vocals), and Paul Chesterton (guitars, lead vocals) and the band has been around since January 2000 Part of Atari Champ's unique sound is due to their use of harmonized guitars and bass guitar. Each instrument (including the lead vocal) has its own place and the parts of all the instruments are intertwined together to build a sound that wouldn't be possible if one of those instruments was missing. One of the goals of Atari Champ is to not create a sound that showcases one instrument in particular, but to showcase the music as a whole and to make that sound as unique and interesting as possible.
