The project was created in 2011 by Thorodan (Josh Gee) and Slikver (Josh Young). You may recognize the name Josh Young as he is also the man behind Astral Winter. In 2012 the band added new members to complete the line-up. ôA Place Shrouded in Emptinessö is the bandÆs demo and was released by Immortal Frost Productions in 2011. ôA Palace Shrouded in Emptinessö contains 3 tracks of highly melodic black metal with maybe a hint of melodic death metal. Plenty of blast beats mixed with mid tempo guitar melodies and powerful black metal growls/screams. The production is pretty decent, even for demo standards though there are some minor volume issues that arise throughout the 3 songs. One example of this occurs when the clean vocals enter the mix (a brief moment on the second track). It depends on which device you are listening to the demo since it is less of an issue on certain devices and it really isnÆt a big deal. Musically the demo is extremely catchy and easy to listen too. If you crank this sucker up your head will be banging û thereÆs no way around it. All of the performances are excellent from the powerful vocals to the tight guitars to the furious drumming. All of it flows together like a delicious peanut butter and jelly metal sandwich. ôA Place Shrouded in Emptinessö is not an overly dark release as the title might suggest. Well, not in terms of the actual music at least. It is actually rather vibrant and though some of the tremolo picked melodies hold a hint of melancholy to them the music has a certain brightness to it. I think this is due more the highly melodic and catchy nature of the music than anything else because lyrically ôA Palace Shrouded in Emptinessö goes to dark places. Some comparisons of the sound and style might be Wintersun, Eternal Tears of Sorrow (Vilda Mannu, SinnerÆs Serenade era), Dimmu Borgir (Enthrone Darkness Triumphant era), Old ManÆs Child, Ensiferum, and Stormlord. Of course these comparisons are meant only as reference and you may draw your own comparisons. Overall ôA Palace Shrouded in Emptinessö is an impressive demo and debut for Atra Vetosus. It is highly listenable.
