│║ ║ │
│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ There are two extremes in opinion regarding the direction a ║ │
│║ band should take, nay, even on the direction that the ║ │
│║ entire genre should take. One position asserts that all ║ │
│║ change is good, while the other claims that living in the ║ │
│║ past is the way to go. But for most normal people, there is ║ │
│║ a happy medium that is actually a little hard to define, in ║ │
│║ part because of the wide array of possibilities between ║ │
│║ these two ridiculous fringe positions. Arguably one of the ║ │
│║ riskier paths within this wide area of evolutionary ║ │
│║ ambiguity is the taking two otherwise contradictory ideas ║ │
│║ and melding them together into a new style, namely pop ║ │
│║ music and metal. In this context, Battle Beast finds itself ║ │
│║ in the unique situation of being a throwback to another ║ │
│║ era, while also melding together two antagonistic styles ║ │
│║ from the same era into one. With an eye for the early 80s ║ │
│║ and a recurring thematic homage to the Al Pacino remake of ║ │
│║ "Scarface", this band of Finnish heavy metal revivalists ║ │
│║ have taken a consistent, yet also divergent path when ║ │
│║ compared with their seminal sophomore LP. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ While the proportions of what makes up Unholy Savior are a ║ │
│║ departure from the Accept meets Warlock with a tall order ║ │
│║ of Judas Priest that was Battle Beast, stylistically this ║ │
│║ is very much the same beast. The songs are catchy almost to ║ │
│║ the point of being obnoxiously so, vocal impresario Noora ║ │
│║ Louhimo perfectly balances out the grit and edge of Doro ║ │
│║ Pesch with a far cleaner and serene angelic croon in a more ║ │
│║ even handed way, and the guitar solos flow like a stream of ║ │
│║ progressive shred worship and occasionally hatch a ║ │
│║ consonant melody. Similarly, the keyboards set up a fairly ║ │
│║ unique atmospheric and occasional dance music element for ║ │
│║ contrast, and the whole production job is basically fit for ║ │
│║ an arena packed to capacity with fist-pumping metal ║ │
│║ maniacs. Essentially, the only thing that steals this ║ │
│║ album's thunder compared to its predecessor is a great ║ │
│║ amount of ballad material and a shortage of mid-tempo work ║ │
│║ to balance out the extremes of fast and slow that would ║ │
│║ cause most to mistake this for an early 2000s speed/power ║ │
│║ metal work out of Germany with extra keyboards. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ If it weren't for the aforementioned pacing issues and a ║ │
│║ somewhat uneven ordering in quality within the songs, this ║ │
│║ album would be a near carbon copy of greatness in the vain ║ │
│║ of its predecessor. It starts off in true triumphant form ║ │
│║ with a speeding fit of majesty in "Lionheart", which is ║ │
│║ followed by two near equally catchy if slightly slower ║ │
│║ cruisers in "Unholy Savior" and "Madness", split apart by ║ │
│║ one of this album's two lone mid-tempo crunch fests "I Want ║ │
│║ The World...And Everything In It", which reminds heavily of ║ │
│║ mid 80s WASP stylistically (minus the keyboards) and ║ │
│║ features a famous Al Pacino quote containing the song's ║ │
│║ title. After these first few songs, things kind of shift ║ │
│║ back and forth between being either ferociously powerful ║ │
│║ like on "Speed And Danger", one of the numerous stops into ║ │
│║ ballad territory, of which "Touch In The Night" is the ║ │
│║ strongest and the most dance music infused, and a series of ║ │
│║ shorter half-length songs that throw the overall flow of ║ │
│║ things off a bit. Individually there is no song on here ║ │
│║ that degenerates into drivel, but this album doesn't really ║ │
│║ lend itself to an uninterrupted like its predecessor did. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ On its own, the original material on here can be described ║ │
│║ as ranging from astounding to reasonably good, but the ║ │
│║ album is given a sizable boost by the two cover songs found ║ │
│║ on the Japanese version. While the resulting sound of this ║ │
│║ album is a bit closer to a Primal Fear meets Iron Savior ║ │
│║ feel with a few more traditional trappings and 80s pop ║ │
│║ elements, the inclusion of WASP's "Wild Child" definitely ║ │
│║ helps bring out the older style that had previously ║ │
│║ dominated this band's sound, while also morphing into ║ │
│║ something that's definitely more modern and power metal ║ │
│║ oriented. By way of contrast, the cover of "Push It To The ║ │
│║ Limit" (another shameless nod to "Scarface") highlights the ║ │
│║ compatibility that exists between early 80s pop/new wave ║ │
│║ and heavy metal that a lot of people still don't feel ║ │
│║ comfortable acknowledging, particularly when dressed up ║ │
│║ with some flashy lead guitar gymnastics. This is more of a ║ │
│║ solid, get the job done kind of album when compared to ║ │
│║ Battle Beast, but most that have already fallen for this ║ │
│║ band's peculiar niche should be satisfied with the results ║ │
│║ here. ║ │
