Once defined as a "crossover Austrian folk-jazzy chamber orchestra from Graz", the bee boys have added an Icelandic accent to their vowel and extended themselves far beyond the genres into their own dramatic space. If their 2002 debut album, Orka, reprised traditional tunes and the compositions of Astor Piazzolla and John McLaughlin, the music of Place Dramatique is all their own. Beefolk is a collection of mad individualists, whose insolent personalities are branded into every bewildering track. The most entrancing of the lot are composed by minimalist-orientalist Georg, at the mouthpiece of the saxophones, bass clarinet and flute, who does his thing with the dizi on Banyan, which carries jazz into zen territory. Co-founding member Klemo is artfully francophilic, weaving his mandola, viola and violinic mandolins into violent romances around the "wall of sound arias" of lyricist-vocalist-trombonist Icelandic Helgi - see Klemo's Anna ("rage against the belcanto") and the lyrical Plast Dramatφk. Anarchist accordionist Bako is the foundation of Austro-Balkan folk amidst the fury of strings and brass, but his compositions Caleo and BourrΘe betray his lust for tango with lively flair. The newest members of the twenty-something bee-band are electric and double-bassist Chris and percussionist-drummer J÷rg, who, while they dutifully play along in all the right places, occasionally slide into the spotlight.
