Otherwise, a record like 'In A Persian Market' is only a very effective transport to some surreal, instrumental version of Casablancas backstreets and alleyways. The dim, occult vision of an opium-addict's Morocco. Consider the history of humor, whimsy and dark irony: Beatlerape, a dark, irreverent take on the White Album. The silly threat and obscurity of Od McUb. A trillion interesting cassette releases from wayback are more like underground comics with no consistent characters than like musical compositions. You have to be able to soak down into BCO, you have to have a certain loose method of listening. I make the whole thing sound like a chore, i know. But it's really hard to put across. 'In A Persian Market' is actually real straightforward; all instrumental, hardly any funny parts, just a cliched rendition of what people think a Persian market would sound like, warped and blotched out...remember those old-timey cartoons with snakecharmers and genies? The scene is completed by music that follows you everywhere. I like how this makes me feel like I've been transported into the cover of a pack of Camel cigarettes...into some fictional version of 1930's - 40's Persia/Morocco. The stilted, vaguely lounge, snakecharmer jazz-ish trio helps with this. It keeps coming back to these places in the music, the same numbers. Interludes of dark texture are ambient, and they are like leaving the cafe at night to walk around the walls of the city, bordering the nocturnal Saharan desert, camels braying at the wind, the smell of Hashish and the sound of arguments on the other side of the wall. Then the antique cartoon music comes back, I see a black and white Mickey Mouse in a turban, chased by a camel. It's either torture or exquisite fun.
