Born in Panama and raised in New York, Cobham is a studied musician whose earliest gigs were with Mose Allison and Gene Ammons, he earned the drum chair in Horace Silver's band in 1968, and played in George Benson's group. He departed in mid-1969 to play with the electric jazz group Dreams before being snapped up by Miles Davis in 1970. Cobham played on the watermark Bitches Brew album, where he met guitarist John McLaughlin. After three more recordings with Davis, including the seminal Tribute to Jack Johnson, Cobham and McLaughlin left the band and started the Mahavishnu Orchestra, whose first three albums, Inner Mounting Flame, Birds of Fire, and Between Nothingness and Eternity, remain highlights of the entire fusion genre, perfectly fusing rock's intensity and propensity for dynamics with jazz improvisation. He started his own band and recorded Spectrum for Atlantic, a timeless blend of deep funk, hard rock, and stop-and-start rhythmic invention that packed as much improvisation as it did power. Cobham recorded five more records for Atlantic of which Total Eclipse and Crosswinds are also notable. He continued to lead his own bands throughout the 1970s and was in demand as a sessionman as well, playing with everyone from Roy Ayers and Gato Barbieri to the Brothers Johnson and Paul Desmond, as well as Larry Coryell, Deodato, Freddie Hubbard, and Roy Buchanan. Cobham played for most of the 1980s and into the late '90s, but 2000 saw him reviving his role as bandleader.
