Granted, there are a couple curve balls thrown into the mix on "The Blessed Hellride"--the title track is the album's token acoustic ballad, and the last track is somewhat pretty because it is driven by a piano. But most of this disc is unsurprising. It's a bludgeoning, southern-tinged, Sabbath inspired album which is full of crushing, doom-y riffs and amazing solos. But being unsurprising doesn't mean it's a bad album. In fact there's a certain comfort and consistency that comes from this predictability. Fans know what to expect, so they're never disappointed. Highlights on this album include the great riffs and several parted solo on the door opening track, "Stoned And Drunk," the ultra-catchy single "Stillborn" (which features a vocal cameo by Ozzy), the wild, four-part solo on "Suffering Overdue," the crunchy, churning "Funeral Bell," and the blisteringly heavy eighth track (the aptly titled "Destruction Overdrive"). "The Blessed Hellride" is knocked down a star because Zakk doesn't really have a vocal style of his own (it sounds too much like Ozzy at times), and some tracks (like "Doomsday Jesus") are too repetitive and thus kind of boring.
