It began with "the guitar", was augmented along the line somewhere by "the other guitar", and has been capped along the years with a variety of interesting haircuts. It's not spoken about much today, but it's fair to say that the formula has remained afloat, since 1984, in various shapes and guises û always somehow fitting into the same, vaguely (but not overly) tuneful framework of nodding-dog plucks, strums and gentle, gratuitous noise. Broadly speaking, Black Nielson's second album belongs to this tradition. That's not a bad thing û and it's certainly not to say that head Nielson-er Mike Page has eschewed the alt.country leanings of his earlier efforts, or the thoughtful tunesmithery of knockout past single 'Lasoo The Moon'. It's just that under the squeaky modem noises of 'Dead Lucky', and the straight-outta rockschool power-riffs of 'Tteezzer', there lies a great, Mark Gardener-esque voice, and a timeless devotion to tunes that deliver, without going all Beatles on our asses. The Grandaddy-esque 'Some Nights Villains' is testament enough to the passing beauty that pervades much of this disc, while certain cuts like 'F.S.U.' and the Velvet-esque plodder 'Dinosaur' will have you reaching for the volume knob, to eke a bit more power out of what is essentially a cool piece of cut-up axemanship. Mike reckons he's tried to go 'Pet Sounds' with this one. That's possibly true of the stretched-out 'Organdie' only û and that's merely by default of the harmonies and cutesy little organ bits. No û what we have here is a clear case of indie.
