This is apparent from opener 'So Many', which starts in a near-whisper, a fog-laden dreamscape enveloped in a mysterious hush. But eventually this dreamy visage melts away and the track reveals itself as something physical and ominous, heavy guitar and a maelstrom of drums hinting at the considerable weight that sits just beneath the surface of Blushing's brand of dream pop. The band say the record tackles "the concept of navigating the forces of memory, self doubt, dreams and loss," and perhaps this deep thematic basis sets them apart from other shoegaze outfits. Even the more accessible tracks, such as 'Dream Merchants' have an ominous edge, the jangly romanticism cut with an ominous atmosphere, some snarling presence that lies just out of sight. The album was engineered and produced by Elliott Frazier of Ringo Deathstarr, and the many late nights as Frazier's studio allowed Blushing to explore and experiment with genre, recording techniques, soundscape and arrangement, resulting in the unique sound that they can call their own. The album moves seamlessly from ethereal emotion to crushing power, sometimes draped in a staticky robe of shimmering fuzz and others raging with elemental force. There's also an impressive sense of magnitude on display, songs such as 'Sunshine' and 'Me With You' illustrating the wide-screen nature of the band's music, all soaring vocals and pummeled percussion. * By weaving bursts of slamming emo crunch into a tapestry of dreamscape synth and multi-layered vocals, Austin's own Blushing is pure harmonious dissonance. Bitter guitar fuzz supports shimmering harmonies and an ever-escalating soundscape on the aptly named 'Sunshine'¥ while 'The Truth'¥ nestles a punchy shoegaze rhythm into a cozy blanket of hi-fi synth. Their breakout single, 2017's 'Tether'¥, begs an unseen lover to forget the past and fly away amidst a hazy cloud of electronic smoke and post punk slam. Across a short life span of two EP's and a pair of singles, Blushing has evolved from the Daria-era 90's indie sound reminiscent of fellow locals Moving Panoramas to an enveloping shroud of effect laden chords, and serene, sweeping emotion. Best served with tender love letters, meditation, and sunshine bursting through spent rainclouds. * Comprised of two husband and wife teams, Blushing is an Austin TX based dream pop / shoegaze quartet that originated in the summer of 2015 after Michelle Soto (guitar, vocals) shared her songs with long-time friend and classically trained vocalist Christina Carmona (vocals, bass). Picking up the bass, Carmona helped to fully flesh out tracks and the two incorporated their spouses Jake Soto (drums) and Noe Carmona (guitar). Their debut EP "Tether" was self-released in 2017, followed by their EP "Weak" on Austin Town Hall Records in January of 2018.
