If you :8################ ##8: expect his albums to contain the thunderous drumming he delivered :8################ ##8: when he was with Kyuss (check out his ôGreen Machineö on Blues for :8################ ##8: the Red Sun, perhaps the bandÆs pinnacle), youÆre in for a :8################ ##8: disappointment, but what you do get is that desert vibe. Like :8################ ##8: CaleÆs records, BjorkÆs wonÆt make you rise out of the chair and :8################ ##8: yell ôWOW, what the FUCK was THAT?ö, as theyÆre too laidback and :8################ ##8: lazy sounding, but once youÆve grown accustomed to that groove of :8################ ##8: his, youÆll settle back, open a beer and go with the flow. Tracks :8################ ##8: like ôAutomatic Fantasticö are nearly hypnotic, so mellow itÆs :8################ ##8: nearly æsleepyÆ and more concerned about groove than structure and :8################ ##8: hooks. The best thing about it all is that, despite the song being :8################ ##8: a really simple, frill-less one, thereÆs loads of influences :8################ ##8: detectable; from æ70Æs funk-soul, the vibe of reggae, the warm :8################ ##8: guitar tones of Hendrix and Santana, to psychedelic jams. The fact :8################ ##8: that Bjork recorded the album entirely by himself (with additional :8################ ##8: guitars by Marco ôFatso Jetsonö Lalli and Gary Arce) makes it even :8################ ##8: more astounding, as the guitar stuff sounds like itÆs laid down by :8################ ##8: Steve Cropper on an acid trip. :8################ ##8: :8################ ##8: Psychedelic influences pop up throughout the entire album, mainly :8################ ##8: in the gentlest grooves: ôLetÆs get Chinese Eyes,ö for instance, :8################ ##8: proves that a merger of psych and jazzy rhythms still makes sense, :8################ ##8: while the meandering ôDefender of the Oleanderö has ôTRIPö all :8################ ##8: over it. Some of the songs are a bit more muscular: the tight :8################ ##8: ôToo Many Chiefsà Not Enough Indiansö with its dreamy, whispered :8################ ##8: vocals wouldÆve fit on any album by the Queens of the Stone Age, :8################ ##8: whereas the funky ôTootö (with vocals by Lalli) and the :8################ ##8: magnificent, rumbling ôLow Desert Punkö harkens back to the :8################ ##8: desert sound of BjorkÆs first band. Occasionally, the music gets :8################ ##8: dangerously close to æsnoozingÆ (ôWaiting for a Coconut to Drop,ö :8################ ##8: basically a slowed-down version of ôLetÆs Get Chinese Eyes,ö is :8################ ##8: even reminiscent of Yo La TengoÆs introvert soundscapes) and stuff :8################ ##8: like ôSun Brotherö is a bit too fluffy for its own good, but the :8################ ##8: song sequencing will grab your attention throughout JalamantaÆs :8################ ##8: one hour-length. So, itÆs not nearly as hard-rocking as any of his :8################ ##8: previous bands, but if youÆre looking for whatÆs possibly the :8################ ##8: - need I repeat the word? û mellowest (in a good way) album on the :8################ ##8: market, this one should be your pick.
