As Karl Johan lit up autumn gloom with shining melodic work courtesy of his C9 production moniker, A1Txi was a standout part of Proton Music's 2015 catalogue. Now returning, courtesy of remixes from veteran Polish and French producers, A1T8i receives its own release. Legendary Polish producer, Kobana, joins a breed of artists who are passionate about their craft, talented and who remain self-effacing. A self-taught musician, endless hours in a studio spent analysing production technique, sound engineering and design helped shape the Kobana sound. With a unique ability to marry digital technology with emotion and music soul, the Kobana portfolio provides a rich tapestry of aural colours stitched within a unique framework. Early work with Yane3dots and Mario Hatchet saw a string of successes across a plethora of high-profile imprints. Spring Tube, Silk Music and Particles together account for over a century of these production credits as 2011's BN2 1TW EP for the latter, lit the blue touch paper on a glittering career. Kobana's relationship with Proton Music has provided a rich seam of success, not least in 2014's debut full-length album, The Riddle, which brought together thirteen tracks across a variety of genres that went on to see remixes from the likes of Marc Poppcke, Derek Howell and Luis Bondio. 2015's Freefall demonstrated another facet to the Kobana arsenal as deep house flavours flowed from his studio. A reinterpretation of A1T8i thus follows in this new deeper, tech oriented mould. A strong rhythm-laden affair, a hypnotic beat and intelligent percussive cadence marks the central pillar for a delightful reimagining of C9's original components. Building in urgency through rising, filtered off-beat riff, the addition of a counterpoint melody adds depth to Kobana's impressive work to create a stunning and original remix. Of French extraction, Rick Pier O'Neil's journey into the world of dance music began through regular DJ performances aged 14. A glittering career quickly followed as appearances in the French music charts saw music subsequently signed to the Universal Music, Sony and BMG leviathans and work for Stevie Wonder, Lenny Kravitz and Donna Summer in turn leading to multiple appearances in the US Billboard charts. With his hugely successful RPO and Garbage imprints seeing support from amongst the DJ elite of Carl Cox, Boy George and Steve Lawler, O'Neil's own production career has seen a vast number of original and remixes hit the likes of JOOF, Bonzai Progressive and Clinique, as well three-hundred-and-fifty production credits for his two labels. A regular on Particles over the past year, the Spirals EP, with Australian, Desaturate, formed the basis for a successful 2015, followed by a remix of GMJ in March 2016. Now debuting on Proton Music, the Rick Pier O'Neil remix of A1T8i is a delicious bass-groove fuelled affair gliding opulently across the lower frequencies as a series of thickly textured pads and depth. A low-slung rhythm and hi-hat urgency adds further dynamism and a slew of additional material via counterpoint melodic flow reveals verve to a wonderful new interpretation of C9's work. Receiving two new treatments of A1T8i in striking fashion, Kobana and Rick Pier O'Neil have given C9 a glorious new spring clean.
