HIP HOPS TIME IN CHINA HAS : : COME. : : : : SOURCE:HTTP://WWW.CITYWEEKEND.COM.CN : : RECORD LABEL: HTTP://WWW.SCREAM-RECORDS.NET : : : : CMCB's time has come... Hip Hops time in China has : : come. : : : : MC Hotdog and LMF, these two Gangtai (Hongkong and : : Taiwan) hip hop groups have been strongholds of the : : Chinese pop music scene for quite some time, one is : : looked at as subversive of Taiwan pop and the other : : one is viewed as a Cantonese pop fad. However, in the : : Chinese mainland, it seems like half of the country's : : youth has never heard of hip-hop and the other half : : don't consider it to be "real music". But the winds of : : change are in the air, when this autumn, seven Beijing : : guys made the ambitious proclamation with the release : : of their debut album "Kong Fu" that "CMCB's time has : : come. Hip hop's time has come." : : : : CMCB (Chinese MC Brothers), like most other hip hop : : groups, have a higher number of members in their line : : up - more than the average rock band unit possesses. : : The two founding members were MCs Xiao'ou and Wang : : Zheng, who in 2001, with their like-minded friend Duan : : Ran(guitar), Zhang Xinwei(bass), Zhou Xiaofei(drum), : : Jiang Yihui(keyboard) and Zhang Ran(DJ), formed what : : is now known as CMCB. Before CMCB, Xiao'ou had won : : praise as the lead singer of rap metal band Twisted : : Machine, which released a critically acclaimed album : : during China's the rap metal boom two years ago and : : ran neck and neck with the famous underground band : : Yaska. : : : : But Xiao'ou grew weary of gratuitous rage and the : : impecunious underground life, and so opted to leave : : Twisted Machine for the more relaxed and popular style : : that is incorporated in CMCB's music. "Although your : : CD is selling to the whole country, you can't live : : life depending on music, this situation pushed me to : : change the music to commercial music." says Xiao'ou. : : : : In September of 2001, CMCB attended a pop music : : competition named China Rock'n Roll New Generation, : : hosted by Beijing People's Radio and featuring almost : : 150 bands. CMCB was runner up for best band, the : : winner of the best style award. The first place for : : best band was awarded to Convenience Store, and CMCB : : has strong feelings that justice was not served: "if : : you had seen the feedback from the audience, when we : : played, and when they played, you would know that be : : deserved first prize," says (WHO?) : : : : Being known as the first hip hop group in the Chinese : : mainland, no doubt CMCB will be quick to catch the : : public's eye compared with struggling underground rock : : bands. But after a listen to the new CD, one is left : : pondering whether or not it is in fact "the time for : : hip hop". : : : : Lyrics aside, "Kong Fu" is a relatively good listen. : : Comfortable additions of electric guitar riffs, : : abundant sampling (specifically Nirvana), and : : alternating tempos make the genre more internationally : : acceptable than typical rap style. For most of the : : local urban youth who cite Korea's mock hip hop music : : or Cantonese pop/rap hybrid as their source of : : reference for hip hop, CMCB will certainly tap into : : this denied demographic. CMCB's authentically : : "Beijing" style hip hop will win favor. Unfortunately, : : CMCB failed in terms of their lyrics. : : : : Of the seven songs on this album (not including the : : three single mix) there are five that are acts of : : self-publicity. Take for example, CMCB's Times, CMCB : : Corps, and CMCB - all song titles -- indicative of a : : narcissistic flavor that transcends the entire album. : : In the song Fact's Truth, they call to their audience : : to listen, and "let CMCB tell you the truth", : : intertwined with rambunctious "hallloooos" throughout, : : followed by Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit sample, : : but by the end of the album, the listener is still : : left searching for this proclaimed "truth". The only : : real insight that the boys give to the life of China's : : urban youth is via The First Close Touch, a song : : dedicated to the stresses and cruelties of online : : romance. : : : : Not as volatile as MC Hotdog and not as trendy as LMF, : : CMCB has grandiose aims but has a while to go before : : they achieve their goals. Xiao'ou's disclaimer is that : : "we are enslaved by factors beyond our control, : : outside of music". Actually, he has reason in stating : : this, this type of music trying to find roots in : : barren land. But if everything goes as the band hopes, : : they will be able to give hip hop a good reputation in : : China and follow (abroad) in the footsteps of their : : heroes - Beastie Boys, Wu Tang Clan and Dr. Dre. Time : : will tell. : : : : : : : : : ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ : : : JRP is proud to release the music coming out of the world's 2nd largest : : music industry, Japan. Expect all genres, major and underground to : : flow through our hands to your ears. : : Expect HOT releases from all countries. : : : -----------------------------------------------------------------------------: : ~~!!!ATTENTION!!!~~ : : JRP is interested in recruiting some new members! : : : : We are currently looking for: : : : : 1.
