But DJs at black stations had more freedom in the ░░ '60s and '70s -- while there were certain songs a DJ had to play, program ░░ directors would let the DJ make some choices of his/her own. Between the ░░ Commodores and Earth, Wind & Fire hits that the DJ was ordered to play, ░░ you might have heard something the DJ felt strongly about and picked ░░ themselves. And because black stations were more democratic and less ░░ corporate back then, play lists tend to have more of a regional flavor -- ░░ something that was enjoying heavy rotation on R&B stations in New York, ░░ Boston, or Philadelphia might have been ignored by their counterparts in ░░ San Francisco/Oakland or Los Angeles. One group that, for whatever ░░ reason, tended to appeal to mostly East Coast DJs was Camouflage ░░ featuring Mysti, whose congenial, relaxed disco/soul number "Take a Ride" ░░ enjoyed a lot of airplay on eastern R&B stations like New York's WBLS-FM, ░░ but was generally ignored by R&B stations in other parts of the country. ░░ ░░ Calling Camouflage a group is using the word lightly -- like a lot of ░░ recordings from the disco era, A Disco Symphony is really a producers' ░░ project rather than the work of an actual group. The material (which Meco ░░ Monardo, Tony Bongiovi, Harold Wheeler, and Jay Ellis produced for ░░ Prelude's Honey Bee label) tends to be rather mechanical, although parts ░░ of the LP are enjoyable nonetheless. "Take a Ride" has an appealing ░░ groove, and the funky "Bee Sting" is catchy, if unremarkable. All of side ░░ one is devoted to the 14-minute title track, a campy and overblown ░░ example of symphonic disco not sounding unlike something Alec R. ░░ Costandinos would have done. The very dated piece, which some listeners ░░ will find corny and pretentious, incorporates some famous songs, ░░ including the Supremes' "I Hear a Symphony" and Jimmy Webb's "MacArthur ░░ Park" -- and it should be noted that Camouflage gave "MacArthur Park" the ░░ disco treatment a year before Donna Summer.
