His ││ │ performances, which combine humor, free improvisation, ││ │ Eastern European melodies, and Italian influences, are ││ │ unlike those of anyone else. One of the criticisms of his ││ │ work is that much of it sounds the same, and, ││ │ unfortunately, that is often the case. Nonetheless, for ││ │ his many fans, that is probably a good thing, as his ││ │ unique joyous blend continuously attracts a devoted ││ │ audience. For this recording, he is joined by longtime ││ │ colleague Piero Ponzo, and the two-sax front line, by now ││ │ a fixture in Dato's groups, memorializes Dato's usually ││ │ simple heads with unison lines or tight harmonies, and ││ │ the bass and drums add a propulsive bottom. The results ││ │ are familiar enough, and whether the listener is drawn ││ │ into the saxophonist's web will depend on whether he or ││ │ she finds the catchy, though somewhat repetitious and ││ │ corny, melodies and wacky sounds appealing. Dato adds ││ │ some vocals by the band (for example, "Introduction Aux ││ │ Asperges") and a touch of verbal sparring, but it the ││ │ saxophone improvisations on which Dato's reputation ││ │ deservedly rests and on which he does not disappoint. The ││ │ music remains danceable, groovy, and upbeat.
