Born in Israel, to a family where music had always been a passion, early piano tuition provided Chico Shuella's with the strong foundations for his Chicola production moniker to flourish, now reaching Proton Music with the deep and delicious sounds of the Maganda EP. A career full of highlights that began with popular house parties, quickly developed into a residency at Tel Aviv's biggest cub, as three thousand strong audiences were held captive as he honed his skills in front of the decks at Allenby 58 alongside Carl Craig, Danny Tenaglia and Sister Bliss. Global travel soon followed as an itinerary taking in Berlin, London and Belgium, saw a record collection bulge as Chicola sought to bring the latest sounds back to his home city. A set produced for Laurent Garnier, played on his radio show, saw Chicola's star burn incandescent, as production work took a foothold - collaborative work with DJ VIC seeing success with Roger Sanchez, Ministry of Sound and ATFC. A hugely successful DJ company built in tandem with a music label and publishing company, Chicola's rise to leading light in the ever-popular and competitive Israeli wedding DJ scene meant that further production work would take a back seat until 2011. Contemporaries of Sahar Z, Guy Mantzur and DJ VIC's younger brother, Khen, a creative, melting pot of talents has prospered in Israel's capital. A trio of tracks signed to Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat and a collaborative effort with Sahar Z signed to Guy J's Lost and Found, there is little doubting Chicola's talent, further supported from the likes of Dave Seaman and Sonic Union. Making a very welcome debut on Proton Music, Chicola's Maganda EP now showcases the skills that have seen him become such an exciting producer in the past eighteen months. A subtle deep vibe opens proceedings as Ghost Train meanders smoothly with its warm bass and lilting groove. Angular percussive rhythms, strewn with white noise powered effects provide a clever counterpoint before a sublime rippling arpeggio seeps into the listener's consciousness behind intelligently placed melodic motifs that rise and fall in their immaculate placement. With its origins in the Philippines, title track Maganda is an apposite title for track defined as 'beautiful morning' in the Tagalog language. Rich textures are stratified in layers that blend together with supreme authority. Deep, rolling percussive toms form a cohort with hypnotic house hi-hats and cavernous kick before further open hats develop alongside a strong groove and a melange of pitched synth lines, evolving vibrato lead and simple melody. As the name implies, Maganda is more than the sum of its parts as, once combined, they light up the stereo spectrum. An assured debut from Chicola certainly provides a moment of epiphany as Maganda rises into view across a beautiful morning soundscape.
