Chloe
My first experience with music was at a very young age.
Sure, we all say that...but I was into a different
sound. I really loved electronic music right off the
bat. I first noticed Kraftwerk when I was five. I looked
at the cover is my dad's record store, and wanted
it...it was Man Machine, and the cover was what got me.
The machine-like sounds and machine-like looks inspired
me. I would listen to them listen to it all the
time...and that took me to a different realm of music. I
got into new wave for quite a long time. I listened to
Berlin, soft cell and others. Sure, I heard chessy stuff
too, everyone does...it's on the radio.
I began to explore deeper music while I was in junior
high school, as my social group changed, I changed...my
music changed. In ninth grade I was shown a band by a
friend who I looked up to alot. His name was Ryan...he
was four years older and into industrial music. He
showed me Skinny Puppy. This band of all bands really
astounded me. THey had this terribly gritty hardcore
sound that still was beautiful, and sad. It was the most
amazing music I had ever heard. After learning about
them I got more and more into industrial music. Mentallo
and the Fixer, :Wumpscut:, and Haujobb all became part
of my collection. My only thing about this music, was
that it only came out on CD...and being a vinfl fanatic
there wasn't anywhere to go.
As I went into high school I had completely changed as a
person. I was trying to find different electronic
sounds, and had started frequenting outdoor and
underground parties. This music was yet another thing
that really proved to be a strong force with who I am.
It changed my life. I would be out all night listening
to amazing music under the stars as many of us have. THe
intimagy of DJ and dancer really made me think about
wanting to DJ myself. The control they have, thet your
whole experience can significantly change with a new
record. But being that I didn't have any musical
knowledge at that time, any idea of what they were
doing, I thought I would just watch, listen and learn. I
was listening to Autechre, Future Sound of London,
ambient mixes, and trance mixes...yes trance...not the
crap cheese trance...but old techno trance. I dissected
it, and learned all I could, about the sound, the
textures, and the rhythms.
I started working at a record store named Easy Street.
There I ordered the electronic and industrial music, as
well as some down tempo. I worked there for four years,
learning and exploring every type of music I could. I
did window displays and all the signs, and pretty much
slanged music everyday... I tried to turn people that
were into rock and other music onto electronic sounds.
With bands like Underworld, the Chemical Brothers,
Orbital, and the Crystel Method, it made it an easier
task for me. As soon as people realized they could get
into this stuff at the store, people would come for
suggestions, and became friends of mine. I also pushed
the more experimental stuff to people I thought would
feel it.
My last year at Easy Street was a sad one. I bought my
turntables, and had been buying records for quite a
while. I tried to push my store to go with this and let
me order records, and sell them, but to no avail, it was
just not what they wanted. They wanted to remain
commercial with occasional CD delights.
I left my job at Easy Street and got a job at Platinum
Records. I worked there for awhile, slanging records and
learning about labels, and how they were all in cahoots
with each other. I was only there for nine months, but
learned so much.
During my time at Platinum I started to play out. My
first experiences were pretty good. People danced,
screamed, and looked like they were having fun. Over
all, I enjoyed playing music for people as this was
something I did even at Easy Street.
Which brings me up to date. I work at Groovetech.com. I
work in yet another record store. I help out with all
our orders, and do all the customer service, which is
something that I pride myself on. I have been lucky
enough to have a part in something like Groovetech, and
look forward to where it goes.
I hope you enjoyed my story...a lot has been left out,
but hiding things is my specialty.
