BIO - Chloe
My first experience with music was at a very young age.
Sure, we all get into it... but I was into a different
sound. I really loved electronic music right off the bat. I
first noticed Kraftwerk when I was five. I looked at the
cover in my dad's record store East Street, and needed
it...The album was Man Machine, and the cover was what got
me. The machine-like sounds and machine-like looks inspired
me. I would listened to them all the time, which helped me
get into a bigger realm of music. From there, I got into new
wave. I listened to Berlin, Soft Cell, Trans-X, and others.
Of course, I heard the cheesy stuff too, everyone did..it's
on the radio.
I began to explore deeper music while I was in junior high
school, as my social group changed, I changed. In ninth
grade I was shown a band by a friend who I looked up to a
lot. His name was Ryan. He was four years older and into
industrial music. He showed me Skinny Puppy. They truly
astounded me. This terribly gritty hardcore sound melting
with beautiful lush synths was a brilliant combination, and
just what i needed. Shortly after, I fell deeper into
industrial music from the likes of Mentallo and the Fixer,
:Wumpscut:, and Haujobb. However I missed vinyl, since most
of industrial music only came out on cds.
In the early 90's, I went into high school and had
completely changed as a person. I was trying to find
different electronic sounds and had started frequenting
outdoor and underground parties. This music was yet another
thing that really proved to be a strong force with who I am.
It changed my life. I would be out all night listening to
amazing music under the stars as many of us have. The
intimagy of the DJ and the dancer really was something very
special. I was facinated with the DJ. They control your
situation and your experience, and can build something very
magical with every new record they put on. I never really
had any music theory or lessions, so I was unsure of trying
it out. So I just watched, listened, and took in all I
could. I started listening to Autechre and The Future Sound
of London, and was able to fine loads of dj mixes. I
listened hard for many years, disecting and learning all I
could.
I started working at Easy Street where I ordered all the
electronic and industrial music. I worked there for four
years learning and exploring every genre of music, from
blues to world music, local and commerical. I designed
window displays and signs, and tried turning people onto new
music. I enjoyed the social atmosphere of East Street, and I
really loved talking with people about music. I grew so much
at Easy Street, but when I got my turntables I needed a
fresh start and somewhere I could learn more about
electronic dance music and that place needed to be in a real
record shop.
Platinum Records is a well respected shop in Seattle
catering to dance music, hip hop and carries turntables,
mixers and professional lighting for clubs. I worked there
for nine months shuffling through records and falling deeper
into everything; techno, house, drum & bass, trance, hip
hop. I tried listening and learning about everything. I had
a lot of fun there and met some incredible people. I also
met some promoters from the city, and started playing out.
My first experiences were good and I enjoyed playing music
for people, but I wanted more. I had heard of a website that
streamed live radio online and it was just around the
corner. It was called Groovetech, and they were doing
something special.
Groovetech started as a community website and moved into
online radio broadcasting and finally into a huge record
store. I knew a few DJ's with radio shows on there, and
wondered how I could get involved. I played there a few
times and after I left Platinum Records, I wanted to somehow
get involved. I was hired at Groovetech soon after to work
in the warehouse. I shipped orders and played in the vast
record collection Masa had conjured up. I took on all the
Customer Service and felt very comfortable there. I had a
radio show called 'Further' once a week, where I got play
for people all over the world, while also helping a global
record store. It was a beautiful time. Groovetech became an
underground phenomenon, but failed in August of 2003. A
brilliant idea cut short.
With the help of my radio show 'Further', and Brad Dobbs
from Sunkissed Records, I met a man named Simon Jones. He
was deep within the depths of the music scene and had
started a site with partner, Chad Harnish called
Progressive-Sounds. Chad laid down the ground work first, as
it was his idea and his passion, only created as a hobby.
Simon took Progressive-Sounds further, adding ideas, label
information, reviews, and interviews with some of the
biggest names in the industry. With his guidance I started
meeting producers and other artists, and became part of the
Progressive-Sounds team. We have developed the site into one
of the best places to find out information about the
progressive scene and yet it's still just a hobby.
Proton Radio came shortly after the demise of the radio
station at Groovetech. I enquired about thier station and
loved the idea of radio and needed to get back on. Sam and
Jason believed in me, but wanted something different.
B-Sides was created on a whim and a chance and its moved
into a facinating direction. Catering to the weirder and
more experimental side of music, I'm able to challenge my
myself and the listeners and hopefully show them music
they've never heard before. B-Sides has grown into something
I love and with the help of my resident DJ's and wonderful
guests, I think it can only get better.
