With the release of Spanish-Danish chanteuse Christina
Rosenvinge's sophomore Smells Like Records album, one
has to wonder why more Latin American superstars don't
trade in the tedium of fame for rewarding cult careers
as singer-songwriters. She recorded in New York City at
Echo Canyon and The Magic Shop, and again enlisted Steve
Shelley, Lee Ranaldo, and Tim Foljahn, with added bass
playing and arranging courtesy of Jeremy Wilms, guitar
and voice of Smokey Hormel (Beck, Tom Waits, Smokey and
Miho), and her first collaboration with the Soldier
String Quartet (who have provided for luminaries ranging
from John Cale to Guided by Voices), giving things a
nouvelle vague flavor, recalling pre-electronic German
music or Nordic pop, all tied together with some good
old clanging New York experimentation. Soaked in sweet
melancholy, "King Size" and "Submission" (equal parts
Gainsbourg and the VU), should become classic cuts, as
should conceptual experiments such as the claustrophobic
"German Heart" (imagine Neubauten fronted by Brigitte
Fontaine), which stretches itself into a sharp lamento.
Other surprises await in "Dream Room," with its angelic
girlie choir drowned in a dark undersea cave, and "Off
Screen," which could've been culled from an unfilmed
Truffaut screenplay. Rosenvinge's lyrics deliver
intelligent confessions with the starkness of Marguerite
Duras -- both sweet and sour, ironic, elegant,
meticulous, brittle and inspired. They seem to come from
a personal, mysterious world of concise romanticism
peopled with kindred spirits such as Francoise Hardy,
Stina Nordenstam and Nico. -tonevendor.com
There are albums which take quite a few spins in order
to unveil their charms and there are some which drill
themselves in your head straight away and there are
those albums which sprinkle greatness in you ear drums
but take only a second listening for you to realize its
full potential. ChristinaÆs Second Album for æSmells
Like RecordsÆ follows this route.
Like Juana Molina, Rosenvinge has a very organic way of
melding her instruments together so that a wall of sound
is created. Take the track æDream RoomÆ; a drum in the
distance looms near, then the violins and cellos
literally stick to this drum sound, suddenly a guitar is
being lightly plucked. Add this with RosenvingeÆs
heavenly tones and youÆve got some excellent songs. It
doesnÆt stop there though, for æForeign LandÆ has its
experimental tracks as well. I mean æLost in dÆ has a
load of instruments all playing the aforementioned note.
But out of the outward tracks its the least. That has to
go to æGerman HeartÆ a brilliantly shuffle beat ridden
song that becomes suffocatingly intense as it
progresses. This proves that Rosenvinge is not scared to
move into different territories, yet a pop sensibility
is retained thoroughout the course of this album. I do
have to add though that all these ideas probably
wouldnÆt be possible if the talents of Sonic YouthÆs Lee
Ranaldo and Steve Shelley (who play guitar and
percussion respectively) werenÆt there. Now its up to
you to check out this imaginative album and hopefully
through word of mouth Rosenvinge will get her 15 minutes
(or maybe more) of fame. -bbc.co.uk
Bio:
Madrid-born, Danish-descended singer Christina
Rosenvinge owns one of the more singular careers in pop
music. She spent the 1980s as a bona fide star in the
Latin-speaking world, selling out stadiums and a
boatload of records as half of the duo Alex Y Christina.
By the early 90s, weary of the endless media maelstrom,
increasingly disillusioned by the stifling creative
confines of the mass market, and newly inspired by the
more personal, idiosyncratic work of songwriters such as
Leonard Cohen, she began to write, with an increasing
deftness and dedication, songs in her own voice, and
closer to her heart.
Eventually splitting with Alex, she recorded a trio of
albums for WEA Latin America, each more spohisticated
than its predecessor, exploring a wide range of musical
motifs and lyrical themes. Sessions for the last of the
three, 1996's Cerrado, took place at Echo Canyon, Sonic
Youth's just-completed Manhattan studios, with SY
guitarist Lee Ranaldo producing and members of Two
Dollar Guitar providing backing.
Her next visit to New York found her contributing to Two
Dollar Guitar's 1999 album Weak Beats and Lame-ass
Rhymes. By now smitten with the city and the possibility
of working with a clean artistic slate, she subsequently
moved there, and began performing locally with Two
Dollar Guitar as her backing group. Work began on Frozen
Pool the following year -- her first SLR release would
also be her first US and English-language release, and
go on to garner both critical accolades and an entirely
new, hard-earned fanbase, built upon her own unique
talents. Since then she has toured the US and Europe,
supported artists such as Elliott Smith and Stereolab,
and played festivals including South By Southwest, CMJ
Music Marathon, and All Tomorrow's Parties.
Christina is currently back in Spain preparing for the
release of her latest project, a book-and-record set,
songs for which were recorded over the past year, again
at Echo Canyon and featuring members of Sonic Youth and
Two Dollar Guitar. -smellslikerecords.com
