Their vocal, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ acoustic and percussion combination is inspired by ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the traditional Son Jon rhythms that come cascading ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ down the island's spectacular mountain scenery and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ echo into its dense sugar cane fields. The group's ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ follow-up record in 2002, "Marijoana" consolidated ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ their reputation as one of Cape Verde's freshest ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ bands, with its purity of sound, sensitive texts ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and humour. Having established themselves in the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ archipelago, they have been taken under the wing of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ France's LusAfrica label, which released a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ compilation of 14 songs that unites seven tunes ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ from each of the band's two albums. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Terra de Sodade ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ "Terra de Sodade" is anchored in the history and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ musical traditions of Sant'Anton. This island is ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ only a few hundred metres away from the port of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Mindelo and is seen as a granary and garden for its ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ better-known neighbour, Sπo Vicente. But it also ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ provides some outstanding sounds and musicians to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the Cape Verdian repertory. The acoustic-based ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ album underlines the wealth of mazurka and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ contredance beats Santo Antπo has acquired over ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ centuries of exchange and invasion. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ But it is the vocal quality of the quintet that is ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ perhaps its most unusual feature. There is little ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ to compare it with elsewhere in Cape Verde, and it ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ does much to conjure the images of lush valleys, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ dramatic mountains and flowing rivers seen by ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ visitors to the island. The songs are all the more ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ laudable when one discovers that their lyrics are ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ sung in an island dialect that is scoffed at by ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ other Cape Verdians. For, according to the sleeve ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ notes, it is seen as a cumbersome Creole spoken by ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ uneducated farmworkers. Several of the album's ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ songs seek, therefore, to celebrate the island's ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ oral expressions and the stories they vehicle. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Others, such as the popular "Marijoana", on the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ other hand, praise the Santo women for their strong ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ will, physical toughness and never-say-die ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ attitude. "The Marijoana character is a symbolic ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ countrywoman, raising her ten children alone ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ without the father, forging ahead, smoking her ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ pipe, fixing her scarf on her head, stamping the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ground lustily, wielding the pestle and carrying ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ heavy loads on her head....", states the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ unattributed liner notes. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Bandleader and producer Arlindo Evora can be proud ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ of the way he and his group have modernised his ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ island's musical genres, many of which had fallen ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ into disuse.
