The album is intended as a kind of spiritual journey, from the surprisingly joyful and straightforwardly life-affirming "Sabbath of Reynold" through the gong-infused walking meditation of "Sovhoosi", through the final apocalyptic reading of Pink Floyd's massive "Interstellar Overdrive". However, while it clearly seeks the bigger picture, Beyond is no new-age stew of misplaced good feeling. Buddha smiles, but he also occasionally gets really pissed, as on the the darker toned "Greyhound Star". Here, angry lyrics ("I don't want divorce / I want revenge") do battle with a slow moving twanged-out guitar, all very passive aggressive until it erupts into full-metal roar. The three-part "Jazz-Odysseia" translates Odysseus's famous journey into psyche-rock terms, the questing, uplifting opening ("Odysseus") giving way to the jazz-rock midsection ("Kyklooppi") and finally ending in the dizzying swell of "Seireeni". It's an ambitious triptych, but pales in comparison with the final two tracks. "Bordeaux 1998" slips in on a lazy bassline and drums, surf guitars sketching melody and French-speaking voices, male and female, bending in and around the notes. It's slack and tense at the same time, building in swells of distorted guitars and heady wails, then backing down to that percolating rhythm line. "Interstellar Overdrive" comes next, following that famously raggedy-assed guitar line down, down, down into chaos and back up through the ceiling. There's not really much that anyone can to do improve on Pink Floyd's version, but Cucumber Farmer stand in manfully, looking straight into the void without blinking, breaking down without losing it, and emerging four minutes later from the underworld with that strange, all-knowing look in their eyes.
