DoppelgΣnger [25th Anniversary Expanded Edition] !!!
Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition. In 1991, Curve arrived on
the scene with a series of increasingly successful EPs via Dave Stewart's
Anxious label. A year later they released their debut album, DoppelgΣnger. A
monster and stately record, it was their sonic manifesto. Self-produced with
Flood, and mixed by emergent super engineer and unofficial sixth Curve member
Alan Moulder (Ride, U2, My Bloody Valentine, Marilyn Manson, Smashing
Pumpkins, Yeah Yeah Yeahs), it's ability to sandblast your nerve endings for
breakfast is matched only by it's tendency to inebriate the listener with
it's aromatic charm. The album features two singles, 'Fait Accompli' and
'Horror Head' both of which hit the Top 40 in 1992. Now, this edition of the
album is expanded and packed with the singles and the three EPs (all
remastered from the original tapes) plus four rare tracks including the Aphex
Twin remix of 'Falling Free', as compiled by Dean Garcia and Toni Halliday.

After being out of print for the better part of two decades, Curve reissued
their first two albums in 2017. In addition to sporting remastered sound
quality, making the recordings sound fuller and revealing plenty of details
in the music, the DoppelgΣnger reissue is loaded with bonus material. All of
the tracks from the group's first three EPs are included, as well as the
album's singles (including the extended remix 12" of "Faet Accompli"),
essentially including Pubic Fruit in its entirety, plus a whole lot more.
There's also the Aphex remix of "Falling Free" and a fantastic cover of Donna
Summer's "I Feel Love." Quite simply, this is the definitive, essential
edition of DoppelgΣnger.

In 1991, British alternative rock group Curve created an enormous buzz with
their first three EPs, which were solid enough to count as a proper album
(they were eventually packaged in the United States as Pubic Fruit). However,
they surpassed all expectations with their debut full-length, 1992's
DoppelgΣnger, which remains their most successful, highly regarded release.
Curve primarily consisted of vocalist, lyricist, and occasional guitarist
Toni Halliday and multi-instrumentalist Dean Garcia, along with a few
additional members who toured with the group and contributed to its
recordings. They combined a dense, aggressive wall of swirling guitars and
synths with highly inventive drum programming, heavy bass guitar grooves, and
Halliday's sweet yet scathing vocals. Curve's noisy, searing guitars made
them easy to lump in with the shoegaze scene, but they always seemed more
urgent and pop-minded, and as overpowering as their sound was, it rarely
obscured Halliday's brutal lyrics, and certainly not her impressively elastic
voice. The group was also far more clued into dance music than many of its
contemporaries. The album's singles "Horror Head" and "Faet Accompli"
achieved alternative club play on both sides of the Atlantic, and the band's
subsequent singles would sport remixes by the likes of Aphex Twin, Trent
Reznor, and the Future Sound of London. Curve were incredibly creative in
their subtle incorporation of samples and textural flourishes -- as huge and
all-powerful as their guitars and beats sound, listen closer and there's even
more going on inside. While most of DoppelgΣnger's songs are massive rushes
of energy, the band slows down at the end for the lush ambient drift of
"Sandpit," which might actually be the album's best song overall. Curve would
continue making excellent albums and EPs after this one, and would influence
countless dream pop, alternative dance, and even goth/industrial groups, but
DoppelgΣnger remains their most powerful, essential release, and one of the
best alternative albums of the early '90s.
