║▓│ │▓║
║▓│ DJ Dres is back in the new year and brings you the latest mix for │▓║
║▓│ his Proton Radio Show Perceptions. Recoil, his latest mix, marks │▓║
║▓│ the one year anniversary for Perceptions on Proton Radio. Enjoy. │▓║
║▓│ │▓║
║▓│ Growing up in Colombia, enveloped by his father's music, Dres │▓║
║▓│ listened to everything from classical music to classic rock, and │▓║
║▓│ ventually became a fan of the new wave rock that merged with │▓║
║▓│ electro-pop sounds from across the seas in Europe. Colombian pop │▓║
║▓│ iffered from American music, and Dres found his first serious │▓║
║▓│ musical interests leaning toward "music that played with sampling, │▓║
║▓│ looping, and then playing over those loops. Stuff that guitarist Lee │▓║
║▓│ Ritenoir and pianist David Benoit would do." │▓║
║▓│ │▓║
║▓│ "Bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode, New Order, Erasure, OMD, and │▓║
║▓│ Information Society all had a layered sound to their music, not │▓║
║▓│ formulaic like all the other pop that dominated the US music scene. │▓║
║▓│ The electronic and synth aspects of these bands appealed to me." Did │▓║
║▓│ this type of layering and electronic sampling eventually turn into │▓║
║▓│ his love for progressive house and trance? Not exactly: "the one │▓║
║▓│ thing I always focused on was the beat. I was taking drum lessons │▓║
║▓│ and played drums in a rock band at school. We covered anything from │▓║
║▓│ The Beatles to Guns N Roses." │▓║
║▓│ │▓║
║▓│ Moving to the States, going to high school, and a stint in the │▓║
║▓│ marching band monotonously banging away on the snare drum decreased │▓║
║▓│ Dres' musical fervor somewhat; but no one attending high school in │▓║
║▓│ the States during the early nineties could avoid hearing grunge, │▓║
║▓│ ska, punk, metal, alternative, and even jam rock and jazz. No doubt, │▓║
║▓│ all of these influences left a young DJ Dres desiring a new, │▓║
║▓│ exciting, rhythm-based sound. The college environment would provide │▓║
║▓│ it for him. │▓║
║▓│ │▓║
║▓│ "After attending a small party on campus and listening to what │▓║
║▓│ everyone called 'techno,' I was instantly curious about this │▓║
║▓│ particular genre." Other students living in the dorms and of course │▓║
║▓│ the internet helped answer questions, and soon you could find Dres │▓║
║▓│ hitting up local records stores for releases from Underworld, │▓║
║▓│ Faithless, and Massive Attack. "The beat and the layering of sample │▓║
║▓│ upon sample simply captured me more than any other form of music. I │▓║
║▓│ fell victim to the growing monster that was trance music. But back │▓║
║▓│ then I had no idea what each genre meant. It was still all just │▓║
║▓│ 'techno' to me." │▓║
║▓│ │▓║
║▓│ Somewhere along the lines, a lightswitch had turned on under this │▓║
║▓│ budding DJ. With friends taking him to raves and parties thrown by │▓║
║▓│ Pittsburgh's Downlow Productions, his enjoyment, appreciation, and │▓║
║▓│ love for electronica grew by leaps and bounds. "The environment and │▓║
║▓│ energy of trance music simply amazed me. Seeing a DJ bounce back and │▓║
║▓│ forth from one turntable to the next was the most mindblowing image. │▓║
║▓│ I had no idea how this person was laying down all these sounds. The │▓║
║▓│ concept of the DJ and what a DJ does was still much of a mystery to │▓║
║▓│ me." │▓║
║▓│ │▓║
║▓│ Endless trips to the record store, party after party, and tireless │▓║
║▓│ reading and listening to music on the internet eventually landed │▓║
║▓│ Dres right in the middle of "the scene." You've heard his story │▓║
║▓│ before: a young music fan turned on to a new, exciting electronic │▓║
║▓│ genre, goes to parties, meats DJs, reads magazines, learns the names │▓║
║▓│ of producers and record labels, and before you know it, he wants to │▓║
║▓│ become the DJ; he wants to rock the crowd; he wants to juggle │▓║
║▓│ records: "Seeing the DJ do his thing up close gave me more of an │▓║
║▓│ understanding of how the whole thing worked. And although some of │▓║
║▓│ the mystique was lost, the allure to be able to play all of those │▓║
║▓│ onderful tracks, exactly at the right time of the night, and seeing │▓║
║▓│ the reaction of the crowd whenever a particular track was │▓║
║▓│ dropped...was simply unreal." We can all agree with that! │▓║
║▓│ │▓║
║▓│ In February of 2000, a handful of people made the 6-hour drive from │▓║
║▓│ Pittsburgh to New York City's legendary Twilo for a night of Sasha │▓║
║▓│ and Digweed, and as you might imagine, DJ Dres has never looked │▓║
║▓│ back. "The second I came back to Pittsburgh I immediately began │▓║
║▓│ buying my own records. I would go to friends' houses and use their │▓║
║▓│ turntables. I didn't have a clue what I was doing, but I was │▓║
║▓│ determined to learn on my own." │▓║
║▓│ │▓║
║▓│ In June 2000, upon leaving Pittsburgh for Boston, Dres bought │▓║
║▓│ turntables, and in November got a job promoting for Club Axis and DJ │▓║
║▓│ Tym Ryan. "Progressive house (sometimes I like to call it 'Chunky │▓║
║▓│ House') and deep trance captured me the most. Slowly I began to │▓║
║▓│ expand my tastes beyond the melodic, into more percussive, housey │▓║
║▓│ and tribal sounds, all the while recording every single practice │▓║
║▓│ session and listening to my tapes day in and day out." │▓║
║▓│ │▓║
║▓│ With broadening tastes and a growing record collection, Dres learned │▓║
║▓│ how to build a set and where to place tracks so they could reach │▓║
║▓│ their ultimate potential. The time had come, and Dres got the │▓║
║▓│ opportunity to spin at a small party for friends in Waterville, │▓║
║▓│ Maine. He played two sets, for a total of 6 hours over the course of │▓║
║▓│ the night. "I felt for the first time the true power that a DJ has │▓║
║▓│ over a crowd. Watching the reactions on peoples' faces was one of │▓║
║▓│ the best feelings I've ever felt." │▓║
║▓│ │▓║
║▓│ Since that time, Dres has produced many serious demo mixes, covering │▓║
║▓│ different styles, creating different moods, exploring new territory. │▓║
║▓│ His friends and fans all want him to succeed and love watching him │▓║
║▓│ from a distance and right up close behind the tables. │▓║
║▓│ │▓║
║▓│ Exploring new music has become as routine as warming up a bagel for │▓║
║▓│ breakfast. "Sometimes I'm amazed at how I keep up with the │▓║
║▓│ incredibly fast pace at which the dance world moves. New artists and │▓║
║▓│ producers pop up every day, new record labels, clubs and event │▓║
║▓│ promoters. It's all incredibly mind boggling, but I simply can't get │▓║
║▓│ enough of it. Some people say that I have dance music playing in my │▓║
║▓│ head all day long, well...they are right." │▓║
