Swaddling her surreal poetic conversations with concrete noizze, Jersey kicks, brickwall riffs, politically-charged raps and darbuka percussion, she ties together over a decade of vital fringe activity, bringing in assists from Moor Mother, Armand Hammer, KAYY DRiZZ, El Kontessa, Dakn, bbymutha and others. Next level, whether yr into Nkisi, Ziur, 1127 or DJ/Rupture - surely one of the albums of the year. "I don't give a fuck," Zubeyda Muzeyyen repeats over rattling hand drums, electroacoustic moans and Brooklyn-based noisemaker-improviser Abdul Hakim-Bilal's Sabbath-like distortions and smoked-out horns. 'Beside Myself' has been a long time coming, no-doubt stalled by Muzeyyen's raft of extra-curricular activities: working alongside Moor Mother as 700 Bliss, jobbing as a beatmaker for billy woods' Backwoodz collective and building her reputation as a world-class selector, hosting Lot Radio's popular Monday Night Raw show. But the time it's taken has allowed Muzeyyen to fully refine her craft; her interests and inspirations are all accounted for here, from the early interactions with her parents' collection of Middle Eastern pop LPs and her mallrat days listening to Sonic Youth to her flirtations with Jersey club, Philly improv and New York noise. It's an album about "rage", "grief" and "alienation", according to the press release, but it sounds as if Muzeyyen has come to terms with her reality, and her place in it. Flanked by a global network of passionate outsiders who aren't willing to shut their eyes as the world burns, she sounds comfortable in her own skin. She might be beside herself as she surveys the newsfeed, but she isn't BY herself. Often, Muzeyyen uses her experience as a DJ to guide us through a labyrinth of disparate elements, telling her own story through various interdependent threads. On 'Remaining', Ramallah-born rapper/producer Dakn, who's been spotted on ZULI and Rama's irsh imprint, gives an impassioned account from the ground, decrying the West's corruption and self- flagellating as his world (and family) slips away. "I fear my imagination," he echoes in Arabic, accompanied by Aquilles Navarro's evocative trumpet lamentations. Muzeyyen doesn't need to add much, but augments Dakn's words with her own: "I know it sounds like I'm complaining," she murmurs without ceremony, "but I'm just dealing with what's remaining." Similarly, salty wisecracks from bbymutha collide with a sampled chorus from SHA RAY and dusty drums from prolific producer August Fanon on the seamy 'Fishnets'. So when Moor Mother joins in on 'Lifelike', and 700 Bliss get their moment in the spotlight, reminding us just how good 2022's 'Nothing To Declare' was, it's a chance for us to collect ourselves. Like a great mixtape, 'Beside Myself' keeps evolving but retains a strong sense of identity; as Muzeyyen presents different guests, there's a sense that they're all part of a single interconnected family. Jersey mainstay KAYY DRiZZ shows up on 'Do u Love me', lending her pneumatic flex to Muzeyyen's darbuka trills and ghosted atmospheres, and the pulses feed into 'Stenography', the album's stunning centerpiece. Featuring cult rap duo Armand Hammer (aka billy woods and E L U C I D), this one's a treat, tricking out the Backwoodz pair's thoughtful rhymes with glammed low-end syncopations and maqam-tuned Middle Eastern instrumentation. The most surprising moment is when Muzeyyen attacks the voices with a hammer and chisel, extrapolating syllables to repeat over the chorus like it's an edit, and when E L U C I D's flow is reintroduced, his barrage of literate witticisms and deflated conspiracies sounds even more sinuous. After turning a wedding dance into a dungeon techno party on 'Loneliness Epidemic', Muzeyyen invites Egyptian producer El Kontessa to assist on 'Sahel', batting chewed amen breaks and percussive fills back-and-forth over across powdery noise and off-grid vocal tics. "I wanna go home," she slurs on 'Distress Tolerance', jacking up her words with environmental recordings and snakelike horns. It sounds as if she's found it, not in a faceless digital nation or a forced, lib-coded community sunk by well-meaning allies, but in a sound that's reliant on sincere, impassioned voices who see and hear the same terrifying reality. 'Beside Myself' is a record with deep, sturdy creative and philosophical roots, and one that keeps growing with every subsequent listen. █▓ ▄▓ █▓ ..
