In 1988 Akin moved to America at 8 years old and at the height of arguably the first golden year of hiphop. That winter Akin immediately immersed himself in American popular culture and music. More specifically Akin was inspired by hiphop such as NWA's "Straight Outta Compton", Native Tongues, Rakim, and 80s pop icons Bobby Brown, New Edition, and Prince. Those early influences would eventually forge Akin's artistic identity along with 80s films like (Coming To America, Do The Right Thing, Breakfast Club). So it comes as no surprise that Akin's sound is often characterized with slices of nostalgia. At once sonically nostalgic and forward with innate qualities heralding his beloved West African homeland (Sunny Ade, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, G.G.Vickey). Akin Yai got his start recording with the group CYNE with which he recorded several albums then transitioned to a solo career.
