Welcoming new artists to Proton Music is always an honour and Dimuth K is no exception. With his first outing on the label, the Sri Lankan delivers his Minesweeper / Beams Aglow EP. Involved in music from an early age, seeing him share the decks with Khen, Guy J and Third Son and music signed to the likes of Balkan Connection, Sudbeat Music and JOOF Recordings, Dimuth K has made a growing name for himself since a 2015 debut. Finding his music supported by the likes of Nick Warren, Marcelo Vasami and Cid Inc., the Colombo resident now opens his Proton Music account with two high-calibre originals. With a high-energy opening of running, grooved bassline and hypnotic driving beat, Minesweeper is a full-on aural assault of the highest order. Building in intelligent fashion with ticking shakers and filtered arpeggio, a rich chord progression provides emotion and dynamism. Reaching a crescendo at the mid-point breakdown with white-noise powered effects and risers, the driving rhythm hits its stride in the third movement to impressive effect. The more languid percussive groove and rolling beat of Beams Aglow paves the way for a melodic bassline phrase to play its part before textured pads add depth. Delicately delayed keys ripple in sparkling fashion, dancing in sunlit patterns, while a distinct plucked guitar phrase makes its presence felt. Always held in place by the strong club-friendly framework, the track eases into the second half with rhythm and bass in full evidence as melodic elements are reprised once again in the latter stages. A regular on Proton Music with his immaculate original music and trademark melodic prowess, the Hidden Arcadia series has seen Erdi Irmak at his very best. Reaching its fourth and fifth incarnations in 2020, the series has come off the back of the sparkling Night EP in 2015 and the full-length You're Either Guilty Or Not Guilty album for Particles in 2014. Following on from an April 2019 remix of Senses Of Mind, Erdi now returns with a glorious reworking of Beams Aglow that captures the essence of Dimuth K's original with delicate use of the plucked guitar motif that transcends the Turkish producer's remix. Adding a smooth percussive backdrop, a freeform, flowing lead line ripples its ways across the six-minute piece while a smooth vocal line meanders gently alongside. The outcome is a cleverly worked interpretation that retains the hallmarks of Irmak's distinctive style. Another artist that requires little in the way of introduction is Simos Tagias. With a back catalogue that includes over 300 production credits, the Greek artist has found a home on Proton Music with his Airlock and Audacity EPs lighting up the label with a distinctive musical style that has drawn worldwide admirers. Indeed, such renowned artists as Petar Dundov and GMJ were inspired to remix his most recent EP in June 2019. Now returning to Proton after a July 2019 remix of Color Ray, Simos Tagias takes Beams Aglow on a wonderful dancefloor journey that builds on the core elements created by Dimuth K and turns them into a storming club anthem. With an ever-involving interpretation that gently builds pace through driving percussion and head-shaking bassline, an array of new production material catapults the track into the third movement with a powerful drop and hypnotic arpeggio sequence. Original music from Dimuth K and remixes from Erdi Irmak and Simos Tagias see Minesweeper / Beams Aglow explode into the underground music scene.
