Hailing from the populous city of Melbourne on the South coast of his Australian homeland, Gavin Griffin has gained considerable notoriety under his GMJ production moniker, reaching a further milestone with his debut for Particles in the shape of the Edge of Remembrance EP. A seasoned professional with over twenty years of experience in the cutthroat world of the electronic music scene, Griffin's DJ skill and production expertise has seen him forge a considerable reputation for deep, spatial, atmospheric music, under a variety of guises, including Gavin Martin, Fulcrum and GMJ. Borne of a deep passion for his craft, Griffin's abilities have enabled him to headline a number of international events in addition to regular appearances within his Melbourne locale. A highly respected producer alongside his undoubted DJ abilities, work since 2007 have seen a clutch of releases under both his Fulcrum pseudonym where Jetlag Digital, Bellarine and System Recordings have seen the benefit of his talents. However, it is the GMJ moniker that has seen Griffin concentrate the bulk of his efforts in recent years. His music signed to such luminary imprints as Balkan Connection, Vapour, Aurium and Stripped Recordings, his work for the latter towards the end of 2013 saw the release of the highly regarded Recoil EP with remixes from industry heavyweights, Dousk and Tvardovsky. Supported by Hernan Cattaneo throughout the summer of that year, support for the GMJ sound has come from all quarters including, Eelke Kleijn, DAVI, Luke Porter and Cid Inc. A sought after remixer in his own right, Dousk, SQL, Fiord and Kasey Taylor all feature within the GMJ production portfolio. Now featuring on Particles for the first time, we are proud to announce the release of the cultured sounds of Edge of Remembrance. Opening proceedings, The Formless Real combines house beats and percussive grooves to form a tightly integrated rhythmic bed upon which a series of groove-laden stabs and cleverly placed delays are matched with breathy vocal pads in effortless ease to create a subtle retro vibe that drips quality. Nothing is Lost continues the adventure with crisp hi-hat percussion tapping out intricate rhythms as tension is provided with hypnotic and metronomic plucks that parallel rhythmic expertise in conjunction with delicious warm bass. Rising pads and beautifully reverb-drenched piano motif add to the overall feel as a warm embrace envelops an impressive work. Title track, Edge of Remembrance completes the triptych. A strong and dominant beat provides a house anchor while shakers and hats belie their understated part in producing drive and energy with carefully placed 808 claps. A dizzying collage of delayed, cyclical motif swims across the stereo spectrum held in partnership with a second melody, while a deep bass combines with percussion to create a tight, locked groove. The overall impression is a track with the freedom of movement, reminiscent of Underworld circa 1994 Three new pieces from the imagination of GMJ has ensured that the Edge of Remembrance is likely to remain long in the memory.
