A debut release sees the three-track Lost in Origin featuring the duo themselves. Gavin Griffin and Matty Doyle have become two of the brightest rising stars in the underground dance fraternity with their GMJ and Matter pseudonyms. Borne of an inherent passion and dedication to their craft and individually responsible for a plethora of high-profile releases on Sudbeat, Higher States, Replug and Black Hole, together, the Melbourne based duo have lit up the progressive house firmament over the past five years with a litany of productions that have continued to grace the industry's finest imprints. Using GMJ's deep rhythms and special textures combined with Matter's rich synth lines, driving bass and pulsating percussive grooves, the Australian artists have seen their work feature on celebrated labels that include Balance, Perfecto Black, Anjunadeep and Proton Music. The latter alone accounts for such spell-binding releases as 2016's Superposition, 2017's Osmosis and 2018's Interscope EPs. Add to their portfolio captivating DJ appearances at the likes of Melbourne's Rainbow Serpent Festival and Replug's 10th Anniversary event at ADE 2020, and it's clear to see why GMJ and Matter are in such high demand. It is thus fitting that Meanwhile's debut release should feature a triptych of impressive power from the GMJ and Matter production stable. The title track provides a backdrop of grooved bassline and ticking percussive top-line while a chorus of pads and evolving textures add layers of depth. Gently pulsating throughout, distorted vocal phrase make their play as different chord progressions and syncopated plucked riff create a unique sonic palette full of grace and poise, Lost on Origin. With its chunky rhythmic framework and immaculately programmed bassline, Microclimate epitomises GMJ and Matter's penchant for spatial textures and luscious atmospheres. A wonderfully delayed and arpeggiated motif then emerges perfectly in the second movement and breakdown alongside a glorious free-form melody drenched in reverb and delay. Extending into the third movement with ease, melodic lines converge with expert precision to create a stunning 9-minute voyage. Distant Moments immediately excites with trademark rolling groove and heavy beat while a swathe of white-noise effects produces a wave of dream-like elegance. A collection of shimmering counterpoint motifs makes their presence felt as they weave a majestic path across each other. An emotive bassline progression adds further weight in the breakdown, repeated again in the third movement to create a stunning demonstration of production technique.
