▀███▄ Gabriel Yacoub - Trad. Arr. ▄███▀

Trad.Arr. (Traditional, Arranged) was the First Gabriel
Yacoub solo album, produced while he was still the leader
of the folk rock ensemble Malicorne. Probably one of the
most consistent folk bands in Europe.
Please note that some consider a previous album ("Pierre
de Grenoble") to be his first solo work but that one was
done with his wife at the time Marie Yacoub, also a
member of Malicorne.
Trad. Arr. is more than an album a statement. As his name
indicates, it is a collection of antique folk tunes, most
of them centuries old, arranged in a more modern
(although still acoustic) way. We may use as an example
the last track:" La TricotΘe" original a palace song
composed by Juan de Alonso for the Castillian Court circa
1505. This song passed to the popular "cancioneros"
(collections of songs) some years later and arrived to
France during the XVI century, where it got french
lyrics,translated from the original.
Almost five centuries later Yacoub recreated it for an
ensemble of folk instruments giving to it a fresh air,
quite different from it's courtly origins.
This is just an example of what Yacoub, working as a
musical archaeologist has done with this album.
Of course this is a different direction from what he
later would do as a solo artist; reconverting old music
or creating new atmospheres using technology. That's the
value of this album. It is the starting point of an
amazing although underrated career.
The musicians were:
Gabriel yacoub. Guitar, Mandolocello, Vocals
Marie Yacoub: Vocals
Michel Hindenoch: Vocals
Bernard Blanc: Bagpipes and Hurdy Gurdy
Barry Dransfield: Violin
Jean Blanchard: Bagpipes and Diatonic Accordion
Hughes de Courson: Harmonium
Recorded during winter 1978 at Studio Acousti, Paris
