Yes, I said it: ║ │ │║ the novelty has not worn off. The epic saga of ║ │ │║ Angus McFife XIII continues with Legends From ║ │ │║ Beyond The Galactic Terrorvortex - truly an ║ │ │║ album title for the ages. This time, the band ║ │ │║ escalate the nonsense from outer space to ║ │ │║ another fuckin' dimension! The evil wizard ║ │ │║ Zargothrax has gone back into the past (which is ║ │ │║ also the future or something) and done some bad ║ │ │║ shit. Yeah, it's nonsense, but the plot actually ║ │ │║ moves forward rather fluidly from track to ║ │ │║ track, almost enough for us to invest in the ║ │ │║ characters and their stupid-ass names. Man, I ║ │ │║ love this crap - more bands need to have humour ║ │ │║ like Bowes and co. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Expect nothing innovative musically from ║ │ │║ Legends.... This is the same anthemic, fist- ║ │ │║ pumping European power metal we've come to love ║ │ │║ and expect from Gloryhammer. The production ║ │ │║ quality is spot on: a powerful rhythm section ║ │ │║ rock solidly underneath the lead guitars and ║ │ │║ stand-out vocals, whilst the keyboards and ║ │ │║ symphonic sprinkle themselves lightly overhead. ║ │ │║ Obviously, I love it when synths are allowed to ║ │ │║ blare a melody right into our faces, but on this ║ │ │║ record that is lacking slightly (except for ║ │ │║ "Masters Of The Galaxy", but more on that track ║ │ │║ later). Generally, this is a great sound for a ║ │ │║ symphonic power metal record, and the ║ │ │║ songwriting capitalizes on that. This is the ║ │ │║ usual 4-5 minute per track fare, with a totally ║ │ │║ necessary orchestral introduction, building up ║ │ │║ to the obligatory 10+ minute finale. Just what ║ │ │║ the wizards ordered. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Obviously, this being a symphonic power metal ║ │ │║ album, the songwriting on Legends... revolves ║ │ │║ around the effectiveness of the choruses for ║ │ │║ each number. And there are some absolute bangers ║ │ │║ here! Opening track, and single, "The Siege Of ║ │ │║ Dunkeld" is up there with the best of them - but ║ │ │║ few choruses this year can contend with the ║ │ │║ majestic "Power Of The Laser Dragon Fire", the ║ │ │║ soaring "Legendary Enchanted Jetpack" or the ║ │ │║ addictive melody of "Masters Of The Galaxy". The ║ │ │║ latter is my personal favourite: rhythmically ║ │ │║ interesting but taking a 'simple yet effective' ║ │ │║ route melodically. There is no end to how many ║ │ │║ times you can hear the phrase 'space Dundee' ║ │ │║ whilst grinning like an idiot. Come to think ║ │ │║ about it, every chorus on this release is a gem, ║ │ │║ minus the (only slightly) lacklustre "The Land ║ │ │║ Of Unicorns" - I'll never understand why they ║ │ │║ chose to modulate the key downwards on that one. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ A damn well-structured album is this one. Every ║ │ │║ song is a hefty chunk of hymnal power metal, ║ │ │║ laden with beautiful cheese, until track 7, ║ │ │║ "Gloryhammer", ups the metal with some well- ║ │ │║ deserved chug. Then "Hootsforce" and "Battle For ║ │ │║ Eternity" take a lighter, more melody-driven, ║ │ │║ almost pop-infuenced approach before the mammoth ║ │ │║ finale "The Fires Of Cosmic Destiny" blows you ║ │ │║ away. As a closing track, there couldn't have ║ │ │║ been a better choice than this multi-faceted ║ │ │║ gem. Through all its blazing synth solos and ║ │ │║ anthemic refrains, it's the genuinely eerie ║ │ │║ ending which has me captivated. Gloryhammer ║ │ │║ naturally leave it open for sequel possibilities ║ │ │║ that I don't doubt will come eventually. Bowes ║ │ │║ and co. are immensely popular in their chosen ║ │ │║ niche field and, as long as they keep producing ║ │ │║ quality material like this - with all the broken ║ │ │║ English and faux-epic atmospheres intact - I see ║ │ │║ no depletion in their fanbase.
