There was a momentary communal squeak as the backs of the five office chairs moved into recline position. Within minutes of this stunning music concluding, we were on the phone to the band to find out more, expecting to hear that they'd just been signed up to Cool As Fuck Records, but thrillingly they were apparently unknown, unsigned and about to play a gig. When we turned up, it was I should say with some fear that in no way could they successfully translate their unique sound into a live performance. The huge deep-dub-bass of Gav Johnson and Jez Spencer's extraordinarily expressive drumming would be enough for most of us, but the whole band are flying. Al Brooker's spacious guitar textures and gorgeous melodies are offset by some seriously hard-core electronics provided by Dave Henson. The energy generated on stage is fierce, yet the undeniable sad beauty of their mood & melodies elevates Gwei-lo to a level we rarely witness. Four individuals whose influences are wide and diverse come together to create a sound so powerful, so provocative that your exposure to it will live within you forever.
