The development of shoegaze bands in Indonesia can be said to have happened not as fast as bands from other currents such as alternative, folk and indie-rock. Curiosity arises about the cause of the delayed movement. But then I remember one thing. If you want to observe or enjoy the growth of local shoegaze bands it's actually quite easy. Just check out the release on Anoa Records in 2015 titled "Holy Noise - Indonesian Shoegaze Compilation". Anoa captured the shoegaze market precisely with a relieving collection. There are Damascus, Mellon Yellow, Astrolab, Seaside, until the Elemental Gaze. A total of 14 bands with individual characters were selected and by listening to this compilation you can deduce the development of today's shoegaze realm for yourself. The compilation clearly presents shoegaze playing by itself in it's own garden. No need to look around, no need to see what other people are doing. And Shoegaze continued to jump and carefully carry out this ritual. As is the case with Heals, a hot collective from Bandung. Heals are a potential in the shoegaze realm. I remember listening to their songs the first time. An honest impression cannot be eliminated when listening to the numbers "Myselves" and "Waves". There are nuances of sinking and and being dragged in the shadows of black holes that they form intensely; as if we are in another dimension. Reminiscent of 4AD bands such as Lush or Pale Saints. In April 2017, their full album was officially released. Titled "Spectrum", Heals plays 10 compositions with a short but deep, meaningful titles. Presumably if we can draw an analogy, "Spectrum" is a rainbow that refracts delusional colors from each band member. But the refraction boils down to one goal called identity. Listening to "Spectrum" for me slowly leaves the classic credo that shoegaze is identical to the slow tempo and melancholic side of Rachel Goswell. But immediatley forget this as it does not apply to Heals. With it's own own style, Heals makes shoegaze attractive and drives fast while inviting emotion to emerge in an unknown world. Spectrum begins with the "Monolove" that doesnt last. The roar of Alyuadi Febryansyah's guitar twists sharply with ups and downs of intimacy. At the same time, Octavia Variana's bass boom drives behind a long contemplation. Then in the number "Lunar" the roar of improvisation is felt in the middle of the song when Muhammad Ramdhan plays a typical standard pattern before being accompanied by subtle noise from Reza Arinal's tools. Whereas in "Azure", "Overcast", and "Anastasia" Adi Reza's drum beat is uncontrollable in addition to emotional screams that fill the corners of reflection. Favorite numbers are "False Alarm" and "Void". Heals play long notes accompanied by a battle of distortion that can't be avoided. Sometimes they fall in the same hole, but afterwards succeed in creating a new vehicle filled with lonely melodies. Meanwhile, through "Void", Heals proves an explorative side that utilizes the scent of dream-pop like the contours of My Bloody Valentine. It feels like the one year manufacturing phase of "Spectrum" didn't end in vain. Ten numbers that prove that this genre of rock derivatives can still sell good musicality. Heals personnel complete the pieces that usually appear to disrupt the entire album. They understand when to widen, using distortion and consolidating effects, and when to free all of them. The playing of each member is also impressive. Alyuadi, as a kind of conductor, directs and accompanies his friends. Filling bit by bit where necessary so as not to look obsolete with a combination of repetitive chords, effect machines, or energetic drum thumps that overwhelm the ear like an electric shock. I am sure that a good album is not made in one night. Seeing what Heals has done on "Spectrum", at least that belief has been proven true and has also returned a fraction of romance to the gait of Cocteau Twins or Slowdive.
