Bavarian Hroptatyr are hitting us with their second album, titled Hroptatyr, following up Auf zu neuen Ufern that had not introduced itself to me prior. Labeled as viking metal, this seemed like a perfect match for me, since I enjoy good parts of the German scene, just to name a few we have the likes of Menhir, Obscurity, Thrudvangar, XIV Dark Centuries, Festung Nebelburgà So Germany is not a terra incognita for quality steel of this kind. And Hroptatyr has turned out to be a mixed bag in the end, unfortunately, partially following in the footsteps of the above-mentioned bands, but also having some flaws in their system that ultimately put a bit of a damper on things. It is getting increasingly difficult for bands to stand out in this subgenre, some bands go for varied vocals, some for medieval or folk instruments and some just put their head down and run into the wall of releases, hoping to get through to the other side. Hroptatyr use a little violin here and some clear vocals there, but have their feet more firmly planted towards the traditional side of pagan metal. If you now roll your eyes and expect something utterly generic, not so fast, because this is not just regurgitating what has been there countless times before. The quintet cleverly builds up dynamics and power that go very well with the melodies and the good use of the acoustic guitar that adds an interesting touch to a few of the tracks. The band hymn ôHroptatyrö displays these qualities (minus the acoustic guitar), where the guitars even bear a touch of traditional metal. The with the closing duo of ôWiedergeburtö and ôRunenschreiö Hroptatyr even has two outstanding tracks that should definitely help propel them forward. The former is an instrumental that shows the bandÆs aptitude to combine power, dynamics and gripping melodies to hook into you and not let go. Ranging from acoustic guitars to powerful double-bass, it creates a great flow, before leading into ôRunenschreiö, the probably best track of the album, where a playful lead guitar weaves through all the tempos, tying the song together, epic, varied, heavy, good! Several of the other tracks are good, yet hardly rise above the genre standard (especially when they bring out the blastbeats, things get a little generic), which does not help HroptatyrÆs case in the end, same for the very harsh vocals that are a little too abrasive for the underlying music. None of the compositions, though, really drag the album down and one stands out in a different way, which is ôMannengesangö, which is solely comprised of clear vocals, acoustic guitar and some violin, kind of a slow tavern song, if you want. Maybe a little long, but in the end an enjoyable and refreshingly different song. Despite its flaws, Hroptatyr is an enjoyable pagan metal album that has a few highlights the hint at potentially greater things for the Germans.
