productions for the Gergaz Netlabel on the Schleifen EP. Containing a vintage sound that bridges raw 90's driven hip hop rhythms with choice cuts from various eras and decades, small pockets of different locations around the world can be felt in the identity and character of each track. Ball room music, Bollywood original scores and the vibrant era of 60's soul jazz are just a few of the worlds you can expect to collide under the heart of the bass and drum. When analyzing producers who are using vintage sounds like this, only a handful come to mind and very few reach the level of brilliance that Je$u$ has displayed on the Schleifen EP. ôReady, set and beginàö is the opening statement that brings this EP into birth, giving way to the hypnotic middle eastern pulse of ôBegin.ö The drum tracking is very powerful and solid, filling in the mix with a lot of presence and size. The overtones are all a construction of samples, sourced from various origins and all of an elegant nature. ôYOrganö begins with a beautiful tandem of organ, horns and the heavy hitting drum tracking as heard on the first number. Slower in tempo, the energy is more subdued and a different style is in motion. The bass notes are very deep and center the track as it slowly crawls through its progression. A dark track full of pre 60's cinematic style horn lines that opens up the pallet of sound into an entirely different direction. ôRainö pushes the tempo of the EP back into the middle register and has a wider sense of percussion layering. The horns are of a powerful and elegant form, sounding like the halls of a lush ballroom dance scene. A surprising state of juxtaposition enters with the choice sample of the late and great ODB. ôBustö has the best groove of the collection, blending in Hammond organ, rhythm guitar and a minimal drum sound. It has the vibe of the best soul jazz organ players, finally adding in natural piano to the soulful and sublime groove once the intro subsides. The state of early hip hop from New York can be felt in this track as well, mainly in the rhythm section. The organ is truly phenomenal and has become a song that has been on repeat since we were sent the EP. ôZackö is a very intimate piece, adding in a sample of a voice in French over beautiful piano. The sound of hip hop legend Common and his background with the Chicago sound come to mind when I hear this track. It has a warming feel that really attaches a great deal of emotion to every tone. ôAYeahö is the last track of the EP and has the most gusto and power. It brings the album full circle and into the present age with the massive sounding samples and rhythms found in every second.
