Born and raised in England, Jenny Evans discovered her talent as a jazz singer
when she was a 20-year-old student in Munich, Germany. After starting out with
trad jazz, she formed her own band in 1981 singing R'n'B, swing and other music
with a rhythmic drive. When she graduated from university with an M.A. in
linguistics, she was already established as a singer and a theater actress and
performed with musicians like Benny Bailey, Al Grey and Buddy Tate. Also in the
80s she managed her own Munich jazz club, "Jenny's Place," and apart from
appearing at festivals all over Europe, also toured Japan and Russia. Jenny
Evans has performed in many theater and TV productions, often cast in roles
where a singing actress (or a singer who can act) is needed. A wonderful
entertainer, Evans always keeps the audience in full swing - which is why she
chose a live situation at Munich's "Unterfahrt" for this recording.
Jenny Evans has it all: a charming, well-trained voice, an outstanding harmonic
sense, improvisatory talent, pitch-perfect intonation and a simply miraculous
timing. In her version of "The Man I Love," she handles the melody and the time
in a way that is probably unmatched since Ella Fitzgerald's and Anita O'Day's
great days. Another nearly incredible example of her timing is "Fⁿr eine Nacht
voller Seligkeit" which can be described as an advanced study in singing behind
the beat. Able to put her own personal touch to all kinds of songs, Evans shines
in this German evergreen as well as in Oriental, Balkan or Latin modes or a
classic Broadway torch song. In fact, she presents three sets of her original
lyrics here written for tunes by Dusko Goykovich and Rabih Abou-Khalil which are
evidently influenced by non-jazz traditions. Says Evans: "For me the most
important change in jazz is the infiltration of influences from outside America.
Jazz has become world music."
