Cliff's been mixing pop and reggae for years, and has finally hit on a balance that sounds neither forced nor contrived. Hanging Fire should put him back in good faith with his early fans, while simultaneously reaching new levels of across-the-dial acceptance. Cliff's sweet and creamy voice and the light, lively-up riddims (spiced by an occasional electric guitar sting) on "Hanging Fire,' as well as the bubbly "Girls And Cars," "It's Time," "Reggae Down Babylon," "Soar Like An Eagle" and "Hold Tight (Eye For An Eye)" make for some of his most memorable material this decade.
