Which ║ │ │║ brings us to Joe Satriani. The San ║ │ │║ Francisco-based virtuoso has earned his place in ║ │ │║ the rock guitar pantheon through hard work--even ║ │ │║ if he often seems to have mistakenly thought he ║ │ │║ was getting paid by the note. This collection ║ │ │║ (which tellingly grew from a modestly scaled TV ║ │ │║ project into one of rock's most problematic ║ │ │║ conceits--the double-live album) offers a ║ │ │║ sweeping overview of Satriani and his oeuvre, ║ │ │║ but that's a decided good-news, bad-news ║ │ │║ proposition. Fans and guitar clinicians will no ║ │ │║ doubt be awed by his technique; others may ║ │ │║ ponder why once in a while Joe can't express ║ │ │║ himself in 3 notes instead of his usual 349. ║ │ │║ Even the familiar swagger of "Satch Boogie" gets ║ │ │║ mired in a blizzard of 128th (or whatever) ║ │ │║ notes. But Satriani is to instrumental guitar ║ │ │║ rock what Evel Knievel is to off-road cycling, ║ │ │║ the Undertaker to thumb wrestling, and Howard ║ │ │║ Stern to civil discourse. Pick through the ║ │ │║ swirling flurries and mounting drifts of ║ │ │║ arpeggios and scales and there's enticing ║ │ │║ evidence of some real soul behind his shades. ║ │ │║ But too often Satriani simply blows past them as ║ │ │║ he plays to the back rows. Nobody's going to ║ │ │║ mistake it for Mozart--except maybe Emperor ║ │ │║ Joseph II. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ I was somewhat apprehensive of buying this ║ │ │║ double CD set, being a huge Satch fan but was ║ │ │║ never quite satisfied with how his live ║ │ │║ recordings (3 tracks from Dreaming #11 and disc ║ │ │║ 2 of the Time Machine double CD set) turned out. ║ │ │║ However, this new recording haven't left my CD ║ │ │║ player since I bought it last week, it was such ║ │ │║ a joy to listen to, and you can tell the band ║ │ │║ likewise was on fire and having a blast playing ║ │ │║ the music. Joe was cutting loose and took some ║ │ │║ liberty re-inventing his material without making ║ │ │║ the songs unrecognizable, while the rest of the ║ │ │║ band followed closely even though Joe's playing ║ │ │║ can be really unpredictable sometimes, a ║ │ │║ testament to the talent of the musicians ║ │ │║ involved. ║ │ │║ This was recorded during Satriani's "Engines of ║ │ │║ Creation" tour, which I had the pleasure of ║ │ │║ attending one of the shows. The songs presented ║ │ │║ were a balanced mix of exciting, recently ║ │ │║ recorded songs and the always crowd-pleasing ║ │ │║ "greatest hits" from his earlier albums. Quality ║ │ │║ of recording is great, unlike a great number of ║ │ │║ live recordings released by rock musicians. ║ │ │║ Personally, I am very pleased with the set list, ║ │ │║ which happens to be influenced by fans who vists ║ │ │║ Joe's website, who were given the opportunity to ║ │ │║ design their own set lists. Except for 1 song ║ │ │║ that I didn't really care for (hint: it had less ║ │ │║ notes per second than other songs, but that's ║ │ │║ not really the reason I disliked the song), the ║ │ │║ remaining 24 tracks simply made life more ║ │ │║ enjoyable while listening to them. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ This double CD set belongs in any Joe Satriani ║ │ │║ fan's collection, especially if you did not like ║ │ │║ his previous live recordings too much, because ║ │ │║ this one is different in the sense that the ║ │ │║ playing was more organic and less of a literal ║ │ │║ recital of the recorded versions. While you are ║ │ │║ at it, get the DVD as well. I didn't realize ║ │ │║ there was a DVD version until I heard Joe ║ │ │║ mention about it between songs. It will be ║ │ │║ amazing to see the fireworks his lightning ║ │ │║ fingers are capable of setting off on the ║ │ │║ fretboard, even though at the end of the day ║ │ │║ it's the music counts, and Joe delivers on that ║ │ │║ front ten-fold as well. Sure, he could play less ║ │ │║ notes and "go for the feeling", but why does he ║ │ │║ need to slow down when the feeling is already ║ │ │║ there in the music? ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Last but not least, for people who have never ║ │ │║ been to a Satch concert: the crowd was NOT ║ │ │║ booing after the bass solo or when Joe referred ║ │ │║ to him, they were actually worshipping him and ║ │ │║ yelling out the bassist's name, Stu! Definitely ║ │ │║ check out Stu Hamm's solo recordings if you ║ │ │║ haven't done so already, Satch fans usually find ║ │ │║ his music excellent as well. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Where did this come from? I consider myself a ║ │ │║ big Satriani fan, although I didn't even know ║ │ │║ this was coming out, and there's a DVD for the ║ │ │║ same concert! I guess I wasn't paying attention, ║ │ │║ but what counts is that this album caught my eye ║ │ │║ when I slid into the record store to shuffle ║ │ │║ through the bargain bin (which sometimes holds ║ │ │║ inconspicuous treasures). Naturally, I made the ║ │ │║ purchase, and was later blown away by the great ║ │ │║ performance captured on these two discs. ║ │ │║ The power of Satch's infectious, virtuoso music ║ │ │║ is caught so effectively here, thanks in part to ║ │ │║ Eric Caudieux contributing the rhythm guitar ║ │ │║ section, which was often a neglected factor of ║ │ │║ Satch's live shows. The techno element of the ║ │ │║ Engines of Creation songs is buried under a raw, ║ │ │║ robust performance, so if you didn't like the ║ │ │║ last album, you'll probably love the iterations ║ │ │║ of its songs compiled here (which consumes a ║ │ │║ chunk of Disc 1.) Stu Hamm's compelling bass ║ │ │║ occupies a big space in the mix, which is cool ║ │ │║ because although Joe's arresting virtuosity is ║ │ │║ the highlight, his songs are often anchored to ║ │ │║ cool bass lines. An enjoyable solo spot also ║ │ │║ underscores Hamm's tasteful ability, where he ║ │ │║ integrates a quote from Beethoven's "Moonlight ║ │ │║ Sonata" and really gets the crowd going with ║ │ │║ some galloping grooves. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ "Time" can be forgiven as a somewhat tepid ║ │ │║ opener (great song, though), for it segues into ║ │ │║ the aggressive attack of "Devil's Slide," which ║ │ │║ blisters with intensity and sounds more visceral ║ │ │║ with real drums and a speedier take on the ║ │ │║ song's big crunchy riff. From there, the song ║ │ │║ selection is great, covering almost 150 minutes ║ │ │║ of Satch songs, from concert staples "Satch ║ │ │║ Boogie," "Summer Song," and "Surfing with the ║ │ │║ Alien" to newer tunes like the beautiful "Until ║ │ │║ We Say Goodbye," the quirky, sparkling "Borg ║ │ │║ Sex," and the dynamic, sizzling "Crystal Planet" ║ │ │║ (with a cool piano intro). Joe's hairpin soloing ║ │ │║ is often embellished live, so keep an ear open ║ │ │║ for elaboration, and he has fun with the crowd ║ │ │║ too. All the songs are treated with a favorable ║ │ │║ production that effectively balances clarity ║ │ │║ with rawness, and each song is performed ║ │ │║ awesomely. I would have liked to hear "Up in the ║ │ │║ Sky," because it's probably a smokin' live song ║ │ │║ (it'd be a good opener), and I wish he'd perform ║ │ │║ "Motorcycle Driver," because it's one of my ║ │ │║ favorites, but those are wishes, not detriments. ║ │ │║ Buy this...it just might become the most ║ │ │║ listened to Satriani album in your collection. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ I love this album and would actually suggest it ║ │ │║ over the electric Satriani anthology, but after ║ │ │║ seeing his "An Evening With Joe Satriani" live ║ │ │║ show at the Fillmore I was expecting more from ║ │ │║ this performance. I guess these sound to much ║ │ │║ like the recorded studio tracks. During other ║ │ │║ live performances he has basically gone crazy ║ │ │║ with 20 or 30 minute jams and had improvisations ║ │ │║ in just about every song. I was especially ║ │ │║ disappointed with Always With Me, Always With ║ │ │║ You which he turned into an amazing 6-10 minute ║ │ │║ song on his latest tour by adding a huge and ║ │ │║ excellent new section at the end. On this it is ║ │ │║ just the basic song. Many other songs are the ║ │ │║ same way. Perhaps he had to conform more to his ║ │ │║ normal playing because they were filming it. I ║ │ │║ don't know. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Satriani is the state of art, about playing ║ │ │║ guitar. He is an outstanding musician and over ║ │ │║ all , he owns a powerful creativity. ║ │ │║ This double album offers some good examples of ║ │ │║ his musicianship. The extremist is one of the ║ │ │║ best tracks, but seen as a whole, you are ║ │ │║ rewarded extremely, because Satriani never let ║ │ │║ you down. ║ │ │║ I haven't the DVD yet, but it must be worthy to ║ │ │║ have it. ║ │ │║ In Film and arts I've watched Joe at least six ║ │ │║ times. Satriani has a strong presence in the ║ │ │║ stage, and considering the prodigius Steve Vai, ║ │ │║ I'd rather set both of them in the pantheon of ║ │ │║ the guitar rock in this moment. Anyway Satriani ║ │ │║ and his talented pupil Vai are the alha and ║ │ │║ omega in the craft playing rock guitar. ║ │ │║ And for those who still think the rock is dead, ║ │ │║ listen Satriani and you'll change your mind ║ │ │║ faster than the first track of any CD finishes. ║ │ │║ Don't miss this album. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ It is when listening to this album that I ║ │ │║ realise just how important it is that the rhythm ║ │ │║ guitars can be heard clearly. The song choice is ║ │ │║ fairly good, and the songs are played well, with ║ │ │║ real energy... but some of the studio recordings ║ │ │║ of some of the songs are more impressive, which ║ │ │║ isn't right. ║ │ │║ The main reason for this is the grossly ║ │ │║ undervolumed rhythm guitar, people don't ║ │ │║ realise, even with instrumental virtuosic music, ║ │ │║ just how important the rhythm guitars are, a ║ │ │║ lack of it destroys the whole band persona kind ║ │ │║ of feel for EVERY single song... Don't get me ║ │ │║ wrong, good album, if you like Satriani, buy the ║ │ │║ album.... just don't expect too much, the album ║ │ │║ is overhyped. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ For anyone looking for a door into the wonderful ║ │ │║ world of Joe Satriani. (The trainer of such ║ │ │║ guitar virtuosos as Steve Vai, John Petrucci of ║ │ │║ Dream Theater, and Kirk Hammet of Metallica) ║ │ │║ this may be the best place to start. First off ║ │ │║ it covers the best material from every studio ║ │ │║ album Satch ever released, and offers a wide ║ │ │║ ranging template of the stylistic boundaries he ║ │ │║ has crossed along the way, from hard rock ║ │ │║ (Surfing with the Alien, Devil's Crush) to pop ║ │ │║ ballads (Always with me Always with You, The ║ │ │║ Crush of Love) to blues (Satch Boogie) to jazz ║ │ │║ (Cool #9), hitting on each one with note-perfect ║ │ │║ precision, composition and (most importantly) ║ │ │║ originality. The one complaint of mine though is ║ │ │║ the surprising lack of material from his peak ║ │ │║ self titiled studio album, which contained ║ │ │║ stunning Clapton/McGlaughlin style blues ║ │ │║ workouts, in favor of his '80s style albums. ║ │ │║ Second off, like all great guitarists from Son ║ │ │║ House of the '30s and onward, there is no ║ │ │║ comparing Satriani's studio albums to his live ║ │ │║ performances. On the live stage, he has an ║ │ │║ outrageous and inexhaustible level of energy and ║ │ │║ intensity that brings otherwise flat album ║ │ │║ tracks such as Borg Sex and Rasberry Jam to ║ │ │║ life. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Third off is the backing band, which is in prime ║ │ │║ form. Stu Hamm is one of the finest bass players ║ │ │║ alive today, and his bass solo on disc two is a ║ │ │║ rare one that is not a mundane distraction while ║ │ │║ the rest of the band takes a break. Very solid ║ │ │║ band that gives Satch the perfect stage to break ║ │ │║ less. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Lastly, the sound is pitch perfect. Close your ║ │ │║ eyes and you're at the Fillmore, it is just that ║ │ │║ believable. Kudos to the engineers on this one. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ I don't have that much more to say, except that ║ │ │║ (contrary to the brainless critic above) this ║ │ │║ has some of the most soleful playing on a rock ║ │ │║ album since the days of Hendrix and Jeff Beck, ║ │ │║ and it deserves a place right alongside the ║ │ │║ greatest of guitarists on your rack. (Note: ║ │ │║ great DVD out too of this performance) ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ This cd is probably one of my favorites. All the ║ │ │║ songs are simply stunning. Songs that had me ║ │ │║ bored to tears on the studio album ("time" ║ │ │║ "devil's slide") blew my mind on this album. ║ │ │║ time is now my favorite song. Joe wasn't the ║ │ │║ only one playing lightning fast licks on this ║ │ │║ one, Stu Hamm took the spotlight for a bass ║ │ │║ solo. The best album ever. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ I've seen Joe Satriani play twice and this ║ │ │║ 2-disc set is a pretty good document of a ║ │ │║ typical live performance from this guitar god. ║ │ │║ He plays all of his most popular songs. His ║ │ │║ backing band is exceptional as always. Jeff ║ │ │║ Campitelli is an excellent drummer and bassist ║ │ │║ Stu Hamm is always amazing. In fact, listening ║ │ │║ to this CD makes me upset that Stu is no longer ║ │ │║ part of Satriani's band. His new bassist is ║ │ │║ alright, but nobody plays quite like Stu does. ║ │ │║ If you're not familiar with Satriani's music, I ║ │ │║ suggest you start with his studio recordings. ║ │ │║ Surfing With The Alien and Crystal Planet are ║ │ │║ both great places to start. If you already like ║ │ │║ his music, then check this out. He's pretty ║ │ │║ amazing as a live performer, and this disc helps ║ │ │║ to display that. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ This is a great album by one of the world's ║ │ │║ greatest guitarists. From the thrilling opening ║ │ │║ bars on disk One to that exquisite and soulful ║ │ │║ rendition of Rubina ending disk Two...this gig ║ │ │║ smokes right the way through. Joe never puts a ║ │ │║ fret wrong throughout. ║ │ │║ And when he talks to his audience he really ║ │ │║ sounds as if he and the band are having a hot ║ │ │║ diggity dog damn good time, too. ║ │ │║ I'm just sorry for Stu Ham getting boo'ed on ║ │ │║ every credit - but he's such a great bass ║ │ │║ player...perhaps even the gods need to be pulled ║ │ │║ down once in a while! So hooray for you ║ │ │║ Stu...and the rest of the band for making the ║ │ │║ best live rock album of the year. Although I ║ │ │║ just wish there had a been a bit more of Engines ║ │ │║ of Creation, especially 'Clouds Race Across the ║ │ │║ Sky'. Just in case you don't know it (unlikely), ║ │ │║ also check out Eric Johnson's new 'Alien Love ║ │ │║ Child' live set, and you'll never need buy ║ │ │║ another rock album...ever! ║ │ │║ God bless you Joe Satriani. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Okay, let me get this out right away. I'm a big ║ │ │║ Satriani fan. But if you would love watching a ║ │ │║ stellar guitar player play fast and furious, ║ │ │║ with great camera work, awesome sound and a ║ │ │║ really solid back-up band, this DVD is for you. ║ │ │║ I've watched it no less than 12 times and it's ║ │ │║ still my favorite. ║ │ │║ If you've never heard of Joe Satriani, but love ║ │ │║ Hendrix, Stevie Ray and/or Steve Howe, you won't ║ │ │║ make a mistake getting this DVD. He plays hard, ║ │ │║ fast and clean, but still looks like he's having ║ │ │║ a blast. His music is innovative, melodic and ║ │ │║ kicks (...)! There's not much singing; but that ║ │ │║ okay. We're here for the playing, Joe! ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Two disks, each with over 74 minutes of Joe ║ │ │║ going to town, add up to over two and a half ║ │ │║ hours of music from an axe master. I love just ║ │ │║ watching how he coaxes all those fantasic sounds ║ │ │║ from his guitar!! This is a Satriani greatest ║ │ │║ hits and lesson in rock and roll guitar playing ║ │ │║ that can't be beat. As mentioned, the video ║ │ │║ quality is great, with plenty of stable ║ │ │║ close-ups on the frets. The positive, fun-loving ║ │ │║ attitude of the band really comes across. Good ║ │ │║ for kids through cronies like me. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ As a career review, this is a fine effort from ║ │ │║ Joe Satriani. Longtime fans will love the energy ║ │ │║ on these recordings, and many of the older tunes ║ │ │║ surpass the sonics on his '80's albums, which ║ │ │║ suffered from too much drum machine and ║ │ │║ compression. Fans of his looser work from the ║ │ │║ "Extremist" and "Joe Satriani" eras (like ║ │ │║ myself) will want for more material from those ║ │ │║ records represented. ... It's as if he is ║ │ │║ unaware that the Emperor's "Too Many Notes" ║ │ │║ quote from the "Amadeus" movie was meant to seem ║ │ │║ uninformed. It was Mozart, the genius, who ║ │ │║ played "too many notes," and there wasn't ║ │ │║ supposed to be a thing wrong with that. ║ │ │║ Satriani's great strength, which is on ample ║ │ │║ display here, is that his music CAN be ║ │ │║ appreciated by both those looking for an intense ║ │ │║ guitar workout and those interested in ║ │ │║ instrumental tunes with strong melodies. On the ║ │ │║ other hand, those who prefer a less piercing ║ │ │║ tone or more of a blues influence may want to ║ │ │║ look elsewhere. All other guitar fans, ║ │ │║ especially those of the rock genre, ought to ║ │ │║ find something of interest here. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ║ │ │╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │╔═════════════════════╗ │ │║ Release Tracklist ║ │ │╚═════════════════════╩══════════════════════════════════════════ │ │ │ │ - cd1 [ ] │ │ - [ ] │ │ 01 - Time (Live) [08:10] │ │ 02 - Devil's Slide (Live) [04:44] │ │ 03 - The Crush Of Love (Live) [05:04] │ │ 04 - Satch Boogie (Live) [05:28] │ │ 05 - Borg Sex (Live) [05:29] │ │ 06 - Flying In A Blue Dream (Live) [06:41] │ │ 07 - Ice 9 (Live) [04:55] │ │ 08 - Cool #9 (Live) [06:16] │ │ 09 - Circles (Live) [04:20] │ │ 10 - Until We Say Goodbye (Live) [05:37] │ │ 11 - Ceremony (Live) [05:57] │ │ 12 - The Extremist (Live) [03:40] │ │ 13 - Summer Song (live) [08:46] │ │ - [ ] │ │ - cd2 [ ] │ │ - [ ] │ │ 01 - House Full Of Bullets (Live) [06:56] │ │ 02 - One Big Rush (Live) [04:06] │ │ 03 - Raspberry Jam Delta - v (Live) [06:53] │ │ 04 - Crystal Planet (Live) [06:03] │ │ 05 - Love Thing (Live) [03:48] │ │ 06 - Bass Solo (Live) [06:28] │ │ 07 - The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing (Liv [06:24] │ │ 08 - Always With Me, Always With You (Live) [03:51] │ │ 09 - Big Bad Moon (Live) [06:33] │ │ 10 - Friends (Live) [04:08] │ │ 11 - Surfing With The Alien (Live) [09:17] │ │ 12 - Rubina (Live) [08:08] │ │ │ │ Total Length : [147:4] min │ │ │ │ │ │ ▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ ╔═════════════════════╗ │ │ ║ Greetings To: ║ │ │ ╚═════════════════════╝ │ │ │ │ Too all people who contributes to make this │ │ archive of good music in a exceptional conditions │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │■ ■│ └───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
