██ Although this artist recorded here and there in the '40s and ██
██ '50s, most of this material was never released or is as rare ██
██ as a bona fide Mojo Hand. In terms of the blues listening ██
██ audience, this mid-'60s Testament production was basically ██
██ his recording debut, and it can be summarized as a grand ██
██ entrance. Although in retrospect the music would end up not ██
██ having all that much to do with Shines himself, who began to ██
██ investigate acoustic blues in the following decade and would ██
██ become much more known as a solo performer than the leader ██
██ of an electric band such as this. The playing on this record ██
██ is simply fascinating; in fact, it makes something of a good ██
██ "how to" instruction for a budding blues band, although ██
██ whether there are players around who can drum like Fred ██
██ Below is questionable. The intelligent bassist is Lee ██
██ Jackson, and not the guy from the Nice who had the Lee ██
██ Jackson bass named after him. Completing the band are two ██
██ absolute legends of Chicago blues, the pianist Otis Spann ██
██ and harmonica player Big Walter Horton. These big names ██
██ don't dominate the proceedings, however. There is a lot of ██
██ material that is done with just drums and bass, or in the ██
██ case of the mesmerizing "Tom Green's Farm," just bass and ██
██ guitar. Stripped down to two instruments, the interplay ██
██ involved in the blues playing here is wonderful, especially ██
██ since the sound of Shines' electric guitar is so unusual and ██
██ Jackson's technique is also not run-of-the-mill blues bass ██
██ thumping. The bassist listens to Shines so carefully it ██
██ might make the listener's heart stop, and the beautifully ██
██ precise moments of musical mingling are the results of this ██
██ concentration and not endless by-rote practice sessions. ██
██ Group joy is reached by adding the drums of Below, almost ██
██ providing yet another melodic accompaniment, as his snare ██
██ drum playing is so tuneful. It is the sound of these three ██
██ that dominates the album, so fans of Spann and Horton ██
██ shouldn't expect too much of their heroes. The latter ██
██ harmonica man did other recordings with Shines on which he ██
██ is more prominently featured. It is Shines himself who is ██
██ center stage, both as a vocalist and a guitarist. He excels ██
██ in both areas, the singing providing moments of saloon-style ██
██ jazz as well as loud, hollering blues shouting and a ██
██ piercing, quivering vibrato that would probably have been ██
██ good for calling in a mule that has wandered off. On guitar ██
██ he uses space in an interesting manner, suddenly coming in ██
██ to insert just the perfect bass line or hitting the high ██
██ strings with the slide in a way that is excitingly harsh ██
██ even in a style of playing known for its strong bite. On ██
██ other tracks he tosses in bits of rhythm guitar magic, again ██
██ jazzy, in a manner that predicts his later collaborations ██
██ with Robert Jr. Lockwood. ██
