North Carolina rapper Kevin "Kaze" Thomas released his debut "Spirit Of '94" on his own label Soul Dojo, Inc. While he showed a lot of promise as an emcee, the album left a lot to be desired production-wise. Enter hip hop producer 9th Wonder, who was fresh off critically acclaimed albums such as Murs' "Murs 3:16- The 9th Edition" as well as Little Brother's debut "The Listening". In May 2005, his debut got a makeover- with nearly 75% of the album being remixed by 9th. The resulting project "Spirit Of '94: Version 9.0" was released on independent label Brick Records. His album serves as paying tribute to a bygone era- early 90's hip hop, which was the basis of its overall sound. The recording, in many ways, serves as an upgrade from his previous work. What he lacked in production values was more than made up on his second effort. Starting the album off is the brief "For The Record", where he addresses certain things in reference to his career. On the title track "Spirit Of '94", he reminisces over the sound of hip hop in 1994. He pays tribute to the deceased loved ones in his life on "Should've Been Here". On the song "Stay A Customer", he ridicules young adults who think it's a great idea to get involved in the street life without knowing about the harsh realities. He duets with fellow rapper Ak Slaughter on "Waiting To Exhale", a song where they indulge themselves in the topic of weed. "What's Good" shows Kaze in a humorous setting, picking up a woman in a fancy nightclub with a hilarious ending. On the song "Last Laugh", he responds to his critics and detractors who felt he wouldn't get far in the music industry. The song "Soul Dojo" has two versions- the melodic Essence Of Life Mix (which also appeared on 9th Wonder's debut "The Dream Merchant") and the rougher Enemy Of The State Mix. Kaze & 9th Wonder's "Spirit Of '94: Version 9.0" is a great album from the North Carolina natives. Sadly, it's their first and last project together as they would have a falling out several years later.
