▐██▒▒▒░ Rippers Notes: ▀▒▒██▌
██▒▒▒▀ ▒░▒██
▐█▒▒▒ The mini-bluegrass boom that takes place every few ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ decades always serves to broaden both its audience and ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ artist bases. A great number of hip young artists have ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ steeped themselves in bluegrass, from the campy ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ traditionalism of Old Crow Medicine Show to the inventive ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ pop leanings of Nickel Creek. This infusion of young ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ blood often mixes well with that of the greats and ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ continues the relevancy of the form while carrying on the ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ traditions. Of course, some new infusions serve to the ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ genre's detriment, and dabblers, purists, revisionists ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ and ironicists abound ï each with its own version of how ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ bluegrass should sound. ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Young Charlottesville, Va. group King Wilkie successfully ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ navigates the maze of contemporary bluegrass and old-time ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ interpretations. Their studio debut, Broke, on the ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ venerable Rebel Records (home to Ralph Stanley, Paul ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Williams and many others) is an energetic romp through ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ fiercely played originals and well-chosen covers. ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Whether they're covering Jimmie Rodgers or Jimmie Davis, ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ the band stays true to tradition without slavishness. The ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ playing is superb and the harmonies are both high and ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ lonesome, but King Wilkie's most winning trait is their ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ ability to inject a contemporary aesthetic on par with ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Allison Krauss into old-time style. ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Their originals, particularly All Night Blues and Lee and ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Paige swing from Bill Monroe's sweeping, lonesome sound ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ to pure Appalachian melancholia. Drifting Away is pure ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Southern gospel in the most classic sense. ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Each member of the sextet gets his moment to shine as a ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ soloist, with fiddler Nick Reed stepping out nicely and ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ bassist Drew Breakey throwing in several nice rhythmic, ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ rockabilly-tinged parts. They also play excellently as an ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ ensemble and that's the most vital strength of any string ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ band. ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Highly recommended for fans of Flatt & Scruggs and Union ▒▒▒██
▐█▒▒▒ Station both. ▒▒▒██
