Additional personnel: Vinnie ║ │ │║ Vincent (guitar). Producers: Paul Stanley, Gene ║ │ │║ Simmons, Michael James Jackson. Recorded at The ║ │ │║ Record Plant, Los Angeles, California. Includes ║ │ │║ liner notes by Robert Conte. Digitally ║ │ │║ remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio. On the heels ║ │ │║ of the unusual MUSIC FROM THE ELDER, Kiss ║ │ │║ decided to return to their hard rock roots with ║ │ │║ CREATURES and the result is their ║ │ │║ heaviest-sounding album to date. Unfortunately, ║ │ │║ Ace Frehley (frustrated by his diminishing role ║ │ │║ in the group) departed the band prior to ║ │ │║ recording. He was replaced by Vinnie Vincent, ║ │ │║ who contributed some lightning-fast riffs. From ║ │ │║ the monstrous drum fill that opens the record, ║ │ │║ it is clear that the grease painted warriors ║ │ │║ mean business. The title track is a classic Kiss ║ │ │║ number with a "take no prisoners" punch. "Rock ║ │ │║ And Roll Hell" is a tale of a musician's ║ │ │║ excessive lifestyle (loosely based on Frehley). ║ │ │║ "I Love It Loud" is a Kiss anthem for the ages, ║ │ │║ with a pounding drumbeat and a sing-along chorus ║ │ │║ that had 200,000 Brazilians screaming in unison ║ │ │║ on the CREATURES tour. "I Still Love You" is a ║ │ │║ powerful, emotional ballad featuring Eric Carr ║ │ │║ on bass. "War Machine" closes the album and is ║ │ │║ Gene Simmons at his ferocious best, a killer ║ │ │║ track that leaves the listener spent at its ║ │ │║ completion. CREATURES shows a focused Kiss, a ║ │ │║ straight-up hard rock record that takes the ║ │ │║ listener through a riveting journey. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Kiss was in a weird state in the eighties. Their ║ │ │║ music from the seventies would be hard to top. ║ │ │║ since the solo albums from '78 it seems that ║ │ │║ Kiss was going through the motions. since 1980 ║ │ │║ they had released lps that didnt do much sales ║ │ │║ wise. But if your a kiss fan like myself you ║ │ │║ bought them anyway.in 1982 after releasing pop ║ │ │║ and a concept album gene, paul, eric and soon to ║ │ │║ be new guitarist Vinnie vincent released the ║ │ │║ hard rockin' creatures of the night. although ║ │ │║ Ace's picture is on the cover it is said that he ║ │ │║ didnt play one note. It was also the last album ║ │ │║ cover to feature them in makeup. personally I ║ │ │║ thought it was a mistake to take the makeup off. ║ │ │║ That was kiss. It would have been interesting to ║ │ │║ have seen the future members in kiss makeup. but ║ │ │║ back to the album. It rocks hard. and I mean ║ │ │║ really hard for kiss. they had a hit with I love ║ │ │║ it loud. Kiss's creatures is one of their most ║ │ │║ in your face albums in their history. It's a ║ │ │║ must have in any hardrock/heavy metal library. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Kiss tries to make their music heavy metal on ║ │ │║ this effort. Some of the songs are a little weak ║ │ │║ and bland but the last track makes up for it. ║ │ │║ Gene Simmons goes off on "War Machine" and you ║ │ │║ can really hear the Vinnie Vincent influence. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ What do KISS, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Deep ║ │ │║ Purple and Alice Cooper have in common? All of ║ │ │║ them had their rise and fall and then again one ║ │ │║ more shot at glory with a glamorous comeback! ║ │ │║ Also, when you dig in the past for a flashback ║ │ │║ of those bands, you are faced with the pleasant ║ │ │║ problem of having to choose out of so many ║ │ │║ fabulous releases. KISS would not be an ║ │ │║ exception to this rule, of course! I chose to ║ │ │║ focus on a record that was released during a ║ │ │║ difficult period for the New York-based super ║ │ │║ group and was also the swan song for the first ║ │ │║ period of the make-up era. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ ôCreatures of the nightö was released in October ║ │ │║ of 1982 and is considered by the majority of ║ │ │║ KISS fans to be their heaviest album ever! And ║ │ │║ not unfairly, I must add, as it is the heavy ║ │ │║ metal moment of a pure rock n roll band. In the ║ │ │║ States, there was issued only one single (ôI ║ │ │║ love it loudö), indicative of the constant fall ║ │ │║ of the bandÆs popularity in their country since ║ │ │║ the beginning of 1980. In Europe and the rest of ║ │ │║ the world, two more singles were issued: ║ │ │║ ôKillerö and ôCreatures of the nightö. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Having fired their original drummer, Peter ║ │ │║ Criss, and ôconservingö in the band a totally ║ │ │║ wasted Ace Frehley, who had his mind more on ║ │ │║ whiskey and drugs than on his guitar duties, ║ │ │║ Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons took this nasty ║ │ │║ situation on their hands and set as their goal ║ │ │║ to show the world that KISS was still there! To ║ │ │║ return to their roots, in other words, after a ║ │ │║ short but disastrous in lots of ways trip to ║ │ │║ disco (!) and symphonic music. And what a return ║ │ │║ that was! Right from the opening sounds of ║ │ │║ ôCreatures of the nightö, one can easily ║ │ │║ understands the aggressive mood and the ║ │ │║ ôdangerousö intentions of the two bandleaders, ║ │ │║ Stanley and Simmons. The production was flawless ║ │ │║ (M.J.Jackson) and the drums of Eric Carr ║ │ │║ (1950-1991) were recorded in a specially ║ │ │║ modified space in the studio and gave a ║ │ │║ thunderous, pompous sound, in the vein of the ║ │ │║ late John Bonham. The compositions were the one ║ │ │║ better than the other, with a menacing Gene ║ │ │║ Simmons in great shape, writing metal hymns like ║ │ │║ ôI love it loudö, ôWar machineö, ôKilleröàand ║ │ │║ surpassing the always reliable partner and ║ │ │║ friend, Paul Stanley. Stanley delivered the ║ │ │║ goods, too, with songs like the title track, ║ │ │║ ôDangerö, ôI still love youö and others. ║ │ │║ Although, Ace FrehleyÆs photo is on the cover of ║ │ │║ the record, he has not played a single note in ║ │ │║ the album. Bob Kulick, Steve Ferris, Bob Stewart ║ │ │║ and Vinnie Cusano handled the guitar work. The ║ │ │║ latter changed his name to Vinnie Vincent and ║ │ │║ replaces, eventually, the ôwastedö Frehley. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ I consider trivial the mention alone of who ║ │ │║ played what and where. I think this is a detail ║ │ │║ that troubles the hardcore KISS fans. ║ │ │║ Nevertheless, it seems that the band doesnÆt ║ │ │║ remember quite well what really had happened at ║ │ │║ that point of time, so a certain mystery veil ║ │ │║ has surrounded this album. The studio was a ║ │ │║ passageway to everyone, which knew an instrument ║ │ │║ and had the time to play. He was featured ║ │ │║ instantly in the vinyl, but not in the credit ║ │ │║ notes! Before I close this flashback, I must say ║ │ │║ that KISS removed their trademark make-up, after ║ │ │║ this album and put it back again, after 13 ║ │ │║ years, in 1996. ôCreatures of the nightö, had ║ │ │║ been re-issued in the July of 1985, with a ║ │ │║ different mix and sleeve cover, without ║ │ │║ capturing though the magic of the first issue. ║ │ │║ All things considered, ôCreatures of the nightö ║ │ │║ has his own history. It may not be the most ║ │ │║ successful, in commercial terms, KISS album, it ║ │ │║ may not have released that many singles, but it ║ │ │║ will always be a milestone for the band, the ║ │ │║ fans and the simple listeners of our favorite ║ │ │║ music! For myself, it is simply the best record ║ │ │║ that has ever been recorded by any band!
