A new collaborative pairing making its debut, LADS combine German techno mastery and South African soul and flair. The result of this symbiotic relationship is a brand new three-track EP that sees Miss Jean arrive at Proton Music. Situated in Western Germany between Cologne and Dusseldorf, Langenfeld resident, Luc Angenehm, has hit the heights of the techno and deep house genres with his distinctive sound and rhythmic maturity. An accomplished pianist with over a decade's worth of experience and schooled at the Modern Musik School, Cologne, Angenehm's production work has been much-lauded. A century of production credits can be found against his name after an initial remix for Slaap Records in 2013 and Angenehm has not looked back with his work signed to City Life, Traum and Solid Shape. Furthermore, two original EPs in the shape of the Kaiserkraft and Isabel EPs for Proton Music have enhanced a golden reputation. From Pretoria, in Guateng Province, close to the Johannesburg capital, South African, Deep Suite, has a similarly impressive background to his German counterpart. Describing his production soubriquet as an intense and heartfelt set of musical contributions, his work has featured on Atal Music, Crevasse Records and Nothing But. Furthermore, his eponymously titled Deep Suite Records has also provided a vehicle for his production work to thrive. Coming together under their own names, Luc Angenehm and Deep Suite joined forces on Abgehn for July 2016's Tour De Traum XII, as the pair now collaborate once more, this time under their LADS pseudonym. Opener, Unterberg is a wonderful study in stripped back beats and intricate percussive programming, while a sublime melodic phrase builds in analogue glory across the seven-minute piece. Modulating and filtering in vibrato glory, counterpoint melodies converge and drift apart with consummate ease. A sumptuous orchestral section fills the mid-point breakdown before familiar refrains build once more. Illustrating elegant musicianship, as a sublime arpeggio rises and falls in reverb-laden glory, the title track is a work of modern art. Muted and layered with glassy, distorted overtones, Miss Jean sees a rich aural tapestry painted, reaching its denouement in the third movement. Juxtaposed against harsh, staccato vocal phrases, the resultant piece is a triumphant offering. The final track, sees a collage of deep house chords combine with ticking, clicking, percussive groove in a deliciously sounding sonic texture that is She. The aural landscape is then further enhanced by a loquacious vocal sample that proclaims the title while expanding on a theme that eloquently describes that She's the fire upon my rock, grew wings like butterfly, leaves today, arrives tomorrow. A glorious exploration in sound and narrative, She tells a beautiful story. As LADS forms a stunning new partnership, Miss Jean arrives on the scene with beauty and poise.
